Vehicle Handbook: A Vehicle Expansion for Twilight 2000 4th Edition

Tue 05 Apr 2022, 02:34

VEHICLE HANDBOOK is a collection of vehicles for use with Twilight 2000© 4th edition. Inside this 58-page supplement, you'll find more than ninety 20th-century (and a few from the 21st) vehicles for use in your Twilight 2000 campaigns.

The Player’s Manual for Twilight 2000© 4th Edition has a great selection of vehicles. This expansion broadens that selection to include vehicles from previous editions of Twilight 2000©, images/information on vehicles that weren't pictured in the Player’s Manual, and some of my favorite military and civilian vehicles. Also included in the appendices are the rules from the Wood Gas supplement. The vehicle tables at the back of this book contain all the vehicles from both the Player's Manual and the VEHICLE HANDBOOK.

I’ve tried to keep this supplement focused on vehicles from the 20th century but included a few that came to production just at (or a little after) 2000. In this alternate history, the US Army adopted both the M8 AGS and Stingray tanks, as well as bringing the M1117 and M1128 into service a couple years early. I’ve taken some liberties with engines, weapons, and some other variables, but tried to preserve the character of each vehicle. I hope you find these to be welcome additions to your Twilight 2000© games. Death before dismount!

Just working through this - there’s at least one typo at page 2

ARV = Armored Fighting Vehicle

First impression - nice looking, I’ll have to go through it in more detail.

A suggestion - I think the boxes for the vehicle stats could be expanded and the stat block text could be made larger

Why does it have the Stryker AGS listed as a vehicle...but not the base Stryker, or any other Stryker variants? That seems quite bizarre. Stryker as an idea (wheeled medium-weight APC, providing an intermediary between light infantry like Airborne/Air Assault/Light Infantry Divisions while being lighter than armored/mechanized "heavy" formations" was an idea and concept since the 9th Infantry Div's "High Technology Test Bed" formation in the early '80's (once they abandoned the idea of operating in dune buggies, the next idea was an LAV-type vehicle similar to LAV-25 or Canadian LAVs (indeed, LAV-25s were brought in to test the concept) that could still being more weight to bear against armor, but be deployable and strategically mobile...this transmorgified into the Stryker program).

Stryker ICV and TOW-Stryker would be perfect additions to the game, coming online just as the war broke out, cheap and easy enough to produce until the nukes fall (vs more expensive Bradley...heavier armor, more electronics, non-active production line), and thus decently common to bulk out light inf formations. STRONGLY consider adding this. Also...having the MGS just doesn't make sense without it. If you want some wheeled gun-toting vehicle other than the AMX-10 on NATO side, base it off an American licensed version of Italian "CENTAURO" vehicle which entered service in 1991.

Also, nitpick, T-90 designation likely may not exist in a non-Soviet breakup world. T-90 original designation was T-72BU, improved variant T-72B. T-90 was chosen in the 90's as a "Tank Model of the 1990's" and also "evolution of T-80" marketing ploy to increase sails for broke Russia (esp in light of '91 Gulf War which shat on T-72 in media). While Gulf War shittening still exists in this world, the T-90/72BU likely enters production more quickly due to no breakup of USSR - an extended process which meant T-90, which was finished testing in 1990, was only ordered two years later, in late 1992, and in small quantity. Thus, lots of time for renaming. A USSR with August Coup success likely immediately re-orders tank production as Western reaction is one of shock and anger, icing relations. Thus, full year shaved off T-90 production, no reason to call T-90.

Otherwise, looks like high quality book. Good job. These are my concerns.

I've seen this book and others like it. I'm curious, how exactly is this allowed to publish your own content for a game you have no rights to? No hate, very cool to see things like this, but like I said, curious about it.

RE: Stryker, it is post-era. A better light vehicle in this role would be the M706, a V-150 configuration used by the USAF in the same roles as its descendant M1117, or the Arrowpointe Dragoon 300 (also used by the 9th ID in specialist configurations) backed up by the M8 Buford going into full-rate production.

Editing notes: M88A2 is the M1 based ARV. It is totally not a completely new wrecker unrelated mechanically to the M88 and M88A1 which may have bypassed normal procurement rules for new platforms by being designated a variant of the earlier vehicles. ;)

The illo of the technical is a purpose built military variant of the Mercedes G-Wagon. It's a jeep analog, not a civilian truck converted for military use.

M998 in the main book is an approximation of the M1025/1026, and by extension the M966/1036, rather than the canvas covered cargo variant. The M1043/1044/1045/1046 are the supplemental armor versions that would likely be Armor 2, while the book's M1114 is an upgraded armor package to the supplemental. By the same token, the M996/997 (2- and 4-litter ambulances) at the same Armor 1 as the "armored" M966/1025-types while the soft-top, 2-litter M1035 would be as unarmored as you assign the basic, unarmored M998s.

Addendum: The armament and TOW carrier HMMWVs might need to have Crew of 2+x or the weapons moved to the secondary weapon column, as one crewman can't both drive and shoot the weapons system.

Free League gets 20%, DriveThru gets the other 30% (I think it was 20/30).

One additional note on the TOW carriers. By this time, all American TOW carriers have a M60 or M240 machine gun pintle-mounted on the left side of the weapon station (the TOW launch tube is on the right and the missile guidance set and gunner are in the center.) This gun is primarily for local security and firing on the move as the missile is understandably horrible in both roles.

Author here, thanks for the comments/discussion!

RE: why Stryker AGS/MGS and not other variants? I really just wanted a US MGS, and the timing on the real-world Stryker was pretty close to the T2K timeline.

RE: T-90 naming. Great points all around! Maybe in the T2K timeline they took a page from civilian automakers and called it a t-90 even though it might have been a year ahead.

RE: M88A2 based on M1. I had no idea, I thought it was M60-based. Thanks for the info!

RE: Technical illustration. The technical illustration is a Toyota Landcruiser 79. (I wish we could get them here in the US!)

RE: HMMWV armor/armament. Yeah, I followed the book's convention for armor. Having supplemental GPMG on the TOW carrier makes a lot of sense!

Fun fact: the Volvo wagon page 38 (page 15 of the full-size preview on DTRPG) is parked in my driveway :)
