Faction Sizes & Strengths

Tue 09 Nov 2021, 18:42

I've just read through both manuals at this point but something that stood out to me was the disparity in faction sizes. The Soviet Reserve Group is listed as 6th Ind. Gaurd Motors Rifle Brigade with 600 men and a fair amount of vehicles, the 3rd Gaurds Spetnaz Brigade at 150 soldiers, and the 35th Gaurds Air Assualt Brigade VDV at 550 soldiers and vehicles. This seems very small when compared to the Silesian Defense Force with around 5600 men and a few dozen vehicles. Whats with the disparity here?

I understand the Soviets have access to a fair amount of armored vehicles, tanks, and most likely special equipment which I'm sure could even the manpower gap. But damn. Maybe I missed something in the manuals. I plan to reread both again but I can't recall why the Soviet Forces are so low. I can understand NATO forces being very low as they just got WHOOPED but the Soviets are not that far off from their power base so surely there would be a sizeable force here. What are your thoughts? What do you know I don't?

It's three years into the war after a limited intercontinental nuclear exchange plus widespread use of battlefield tactical nuclear weapons and nerve agents. Forces on all sides are decimated. Re. the disparity with the Silesian Defense Force, that consists of remnants of divisions whilst the Russian QRF is remnants of brigades - different starting sizes.

But how is it, that the Silesian Defense Force is so large when they should ideally be just as damaged as the NATO and Soviet Forces? Legit question and thoughts.

The Silesian Defense Force comprises remnants of the 11th Armored Cavalry Division, 25th Air Cavalry Division (should be Brigade I think), Podelski Mechanized Infantry Brigade and 6th Air Assault Brigade. That's 6 pre-war brigades (the 11th had 3 brigades).

The Soviet Reserve Group comprises remnants of the 6th Independent Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, 3rd Guards Spetsnaz Brigade and 35th Guards Air Assault Brigade VDV. That's 3 pre-war brigades.

Granted, the 11th Armored Cavalry Division with 3,200 men and 26 tanks looks considerably less depleted than the rest by a factor of about half, but the units comprising the Silesian Defense Force kind of deserted and are no longer responding to communications. Their decision to split from the NATO backed Silesian Corps may have helped preserve the force. Presumably more information will be provided in the "Free City of Krakow" supplement?

Theres 36 tanks in their brigade. Which is a ton! It definitely gives me vibes that they'll be fairly succesful into their goal though they may not push farther than their stated goal. I'm fairly new to the system (and Twilight in general) but I get the feeling if they thoroughly threatened the Soviet Remnants, that somehow, Soviet reinforcements would arrive to even the odds. Hopefully the supplement gives them some proper enemies or obstacles. Otherwise I could see them steamrolling everyone.

There isn't much supply left (fuel, ammo, food, medicine). I don't think there will be any steam rolling for a very long time.

I would assume that the Spetsnaz and VDV took very heavy casualties in the recent fighting, and throughout the war, because... well, that's what tends to happen to those kind of units!

25th Air Cavalry Division (should be Brigade I think)
Historically this Polish Army unit was a division from 1994 to 1999, thereafter a brigade. I think we can assume that in the Twilight War timeline it retained the division designation.
