Movement Question

Sat 24 Apr 2021, 05:26

For Battle Maps, each hex is 10 meters across. And basic Foot Movement is two hexes.

But, what is the Movement rate for smaller area maps, such as the inside of a building? Obviously 10 meter hexes wouldn't be appropriate. So, how far can a character move inside a building?

Seems to me a Move is 20 Meters (+10 meters per success on Mobility roll). So you'd just scale that to the hexes in your building.

Don't forget a Movement Action is classified as Running (or Crawling). It's just is the max a player can move in 5-10 seconds (1 Round). A player can choose to move much less than that.

Well, what kind of building are we talking about? A house or a hotel? That's about 1 room = 1 hex. A gym with a basketball court? That's about 30-40m long, at least. A Walmart Supercenter? There's lanes probably 200m long in some of those things. Agricultural and industrial buildings might be even bigger than that.

Remember that passing through doorways (even open ones!) takes an action. This seemed weird to me at first, but in practice it mostly works. It's pretty damn difficult to full-out sprint in most hallways, even without gear on. So this forces you to either take it nice and slow, or put yourself at much bigger risk.

In other YZE-games they have zone movement. That, technically is the same thing as the hexagons here. If you want to move from one space to another, even within a zone (10-hexagon here) it is still a move.

I guess I should have elaborated. Hexes are great for a lot of things. What they are not great for is tight spaces. Due to the angles involved, they tend to fall apart when you're trying to model a house with 3 rooms that ought to be made up of basically three hexes. So yeah, generally whenever someone moves indoors, I switch to theater-of-the-mind (or, if it's really critical, another form of map that just shows rooms and key objects) and play it out that way, as far as inside-the-building goes. If someone's in a building alone and engaging out the windows, then that has no real effect on normal combat as written. They just get the potential cover/protection bonuses.

(I try to use theater of the mind often, actually, unless it's a major battle at a key location. The burden of trying to quickly produce appropriate maps for different settings that don't become repetitive is fairly serious, and I've found quite often the battle map simply isn't needed and slows things down. So I try to mix and match.)

You could easily just change the scale. Using 2 meters hexagons instead and multiply all movement capacity and ranges with 5 (or 1 meter hexagon and multiply with 10, or 5 meter hexagon and multiply with 2).

For indoor maps using squares instead of hexes seems optimal. Previous editions have a lot of such materials available as well, with different scales per square.
I certainly agree that playing with battle maps slows down the combat a lot, but then again it's really nice and fun to fiddle around with maps and miniatures.
