Learning Talents and Pushing a Wits roll

Sun 27 Dec 2020, 23:56

Do you allow players to push their wits roll when attempting to learn a new talent?
I can see pushing the roll being abused while in a village, since the adventurers can immediately rest/sleep to heal up any loss of attributes, then attempt again.

If recall correctly, this is not a skill roll, but an attribute roll. Only skill rolls can be pushed.
Again, if I recall correctly.

I think you're mistaken here, because in this case the would simply be no damage by pushed rolls to the attributes.

The intent is that you can't push this Wits roll (only skill rolls can be pushed). In the YZE OGL this has been clarified.

pg 44 player handbook: If you are desperate to succeed with a skill roll, you can choose to push it.

The Charisma roll is not a skill roll, ergo it can not be pushed.

As far as I can see, there are no distinct types of rolls in the Forbidden lands rules. The rules we have describe how to roll using attributes and skills (and items) and imply that ALL rolls are skills rolls. So if we want to be technical about it, I don't think attribute rolls exist within the rules. For a reader without experience of other Free League systems, I think the reasonable assumption when told to do an attribute roll is that it works just like a regular roll but with only attribute dice, ergo it can be pushed.

Now, it seems this isn't the intent and I accept that. But I see that as a change compared to the rules as written rather than a clarification.

Note: the Coup de Grace rules clarify an attribute roll as "roll for the attribute only", but that isn't super helpful.

How to make a skill roll is described under skills and is used for the 16 skills in the game. There are other rolls in the game, but those are not skill rolls and can't be pushed (like Armor roll, training roll, coup de grace rolls, magic mishap roll, etc.).

Sure, they might clarify this if we get another printing of the game, but while waiting for that, all we can do is to find answers here (and on other social media) where FL have answered these type of questions or go to the OGL, which is updated.

You are right that there are other types of rolls of course. I was a bit hyperbolic I guess. However, both armour and magic rolls are clearly described in their respective sections, they don't involve any attributes and magic even explicitly clarifies that the roll can not be pushed. And for coup de grace the typical goal is to fail, so pushing is kinda irrelevant.

The point I'm trying to make to the people in here asking questions is that the rules are unclear at best, and I feel like many of the responses in here are written as if they are obvious which I feel is rather unhelpful.
