Melee Charge- Would you allow...

Fri 11 Dec 2020, 23:57

The Talent Melee Charge at Rank 1 allows a player who moves from Near to Arms to make 1 attack as part of their move action.

My question is, If a player has a weapon that has a range of Near like a spear or flail would you allow them to use the talent when moving from Short to Near?

Why or why not? I am looking for good arguments either way.

I am also interested to hear if the Devs had any particular reason for the Near to Arms wording. Maybe there was some kind of balance element to it I am not seeing? Maybe it was just easier wording? What does everyone think?

It should be allowed. Nothing in the rules says you can't use a near weapon in arms length.

As for the wording, I think it has to do with the higher ranks of CHARGE were you get dice bonuses for using the charge. In those cases a charge is better than a standard attack, and you can't charge someone you're already at arms length with. It also encourages a different take on combat with a high mobile character charging from enemy to enemy.

Ah thats interesting. A potential loop hole for double charging. Move from Short to near and attack. Move from Near to arms and attack. 2 moves 2 attacks in 1 round. Even if you changed the wording to when you move into range of the weapon there is a potential combo with a Short Spear and a Sword duel wielding. With Ambidextrous 3. Short to Near attack with spear. Near to Arms attack with sword.

A charge still counts as a Slow action, so you can't perform two of them in a single round as you are still bound by the economy of one Slow and one Fast action.

The charge does not count as a slow action. Its a move action which are fast.

The Talent, Melee Charge, says when you move from near to arms you can make an attack as part of the action. Moving from near to arms is a RUN action which is fast and the attack is free.

it is In the 2nd printing of the rulebook (if you have the pdf through drivethru that can be updated). If you don't have that, there is an errata with erratas (duh) and clarifications.

To the post with errata links.

Well it's nice that they added that to the table of slow actions but they really should have put that in the wording of the Talent heh. Thanks for the clarifications.

It is in the talent description in the 2nd printing of the book so that's good then.
edit: for us who use the Swedish rulebook we don't have an updated pdf :(
