I remember reading somewhere that you can only push your dice on a action you initiate. Does this mean you can't push on your defence roll?

All the active parts in a skill roll can push (I know they don't use that word, but it is a better word). You are not allowed to push if you are the passive part in an opposed roll (I think they call it defender in the book). The rules also say that defending in close combat follows a different mechanics and the defender is allowed to push in that case.

So technically the skill rolls that you aren't allowed to push are the scouting roll that you roll when someone is sneak attacking you and the insight roll that you roll against someone that is manipulating you.

Conflicts: In a conflict (Chapter 6), an opposed roll only counts as an action for you, not for your op- ponent (the defender). Defending in close combat (page 84) is technically not an opposed roll, as it follows somewhat different mechanics.

I guess the way they look at it, Defending in close combat uses your next available Action so you aren’t a passive participant in an opposed roll, as you would be in a Sense Motive vs Manipulate or Scout vs Sneak roll.
