Damage to artifacts

Wed 05 Feb 2020, 20:27

The listed artifacts in the GM guide, some of which are real important to the campaigns, Ravens Purge for example, I assume can be destroyed like any other item? Take Scarnsbane for example, if a PC pushes rolls and reduces its gear bonus to zero the weapon is damaged and cannot be used unless repaired. If the repair attempt fails the item is destroyed PERMANENTLY right? I'm sure I can present the players with a quest to get it fixed, but rules as written say the item is destroyed forever correct?

After any of the weapons critical to the campaign though? It seems to me that as far as Raven's Purge is concerned it is the rubies that power some of the artefacts that are important.

I guess all the artifacts are as only important as your story dictates... The sword "Asina" is the only weapon capable of separating Zytera, not required to complete the story but still something worth acquiring for the players. Finding it is an adventure in itself, but rules as written might scare them from actually using it, or by the time they know it's true purpose it gets broken with no possibility of repair... This game is brutal I get that and rules are rules, but I guess what I'm after is others take on this, allowing certain items to be repaired, albeit not easily(another adventure). Or do you let the items stay broke and that's that?

My players usually go to a good smith and repair things when it comes to important things. Better than them, anyway.

You can do a 'failing forward' to the repair skill roll if it fails. Something else really bad happens but the rolls counts as a success (The Art of Failure).

Thomas, lead designer of the game, talks about this here.
