Is it reasonable to not allow a Manipulation attempt if the approach isn't reasonable? In most games, manipulation isn't mind control. If you don't know what levers will move an NPC (and you haven't tried to find out), is it reasonable just to rule "you can't do that, so no roll is required." For example, it would be weird if the rules required that players can just make Zygofer a good guy through a lucky manipulation roll.

If your PC's would try something as ridicolus as making Zygofer a good guy than you just simply say no. You are the GM, bend the rules like you want and find reasonable but try to keep your players happy at the same time

There’s literally a sidebar or box that says manipulation isn’t mind control. You can’t get someone to act against their core interests. Manipulation is about marginal cases.

It’s also worth noting that Zygofer likely thinks of itself as the good guy already.
