Wars!

Mon 18 Nov 2019, 02:43

There is a lot of entries in the L&A book that pertain battles, organized military, soldiers and commanders. So the question is - who fought with whom? Who can have an army? When was it? You can roll these formative events early on and then roll some more leaving you as an old man with a military background in his younger days which would be during the Mist.

First: I suspect the lifepaths in Legends&Adventurers may predate the addition of the Blood Mist to the setting. It definitely predates the edition of the ruleset that was released. Erik Granstrom has said in interview that the Blood Mist was added rather late (I'm paraphrasing hopefully correctly) in the setting creation:

That said, you can keep within the setting with a couple considerations:

1) A considerable group of soldiers at camp may well not have been at risk from the Bloodmist, well except for the poor idiot who strayed too far to take a piss. The nomadic Aslene clans didn't stop being nomadic during the Blood Mist so it's internally consistent that a large group could still travel the land as nomads even during the time of the Mist. Even smaller bands could likely have been safe in this way, the feeling of safety in numbers giving them the confidence enough that they wouldn't be targeted by the Mist though they wouldn't have known why they were able to make this dangerous trek.

2) Scale. Even given the above I wouldn't imagine armies of hundreds maybe of tens or a few dozen. Petty lords fighting each other or maybe even villages trying to resist their people being taken by the Rust Brothers. Orc tribes fighting each other or some other group. If we accept that a good number of soldiers could camp relatively unmolested then this sort of action could be imagined.

3) The Blood Mist wasn't an absolute barrier but it did make everything harder. I find it useful to think of it as something that isolated but not completely. The truly determined and motivated could perhaps travel, perhaps in larger groups and caravans, while most ordinary travel was made incredibly difficult or even impossible for individuals or tiny parties. Both these things can be true.
