Skill Rolls and Stress Dice

Thu 04 Jul 2019, 19:43

I have found two instances in the rules (pg 35 & 67) where it states that having Stress increases your chance of success on a Skill Roll.  However, the mechanic for Skill Rolls states that 6's on your Base Dice only determine success or failure.  Stress Dice do not factor into success/failure, except that any 1 rolled on a Stress Dice negates your ability to push the roll, thereby actually decreasing your chance of success because the push re-roll is eliminated.  Furthermore, any 1 rolled on a Stress Dice requires a Panic Roll to be made.  The result of that Panic Roll might indeed negate an otherwise successful Skill Roll.

So it would seem to me having Stress Dice included in your Skill Roll in no way increases your chance of success, and in fact adds to your chance of failure.  Have I missed something?  Could perhaps the statements concerning Stress increasing your chance of success be a hold over from a time when the Skill Roll mechanic was different and should have been edited out?

Look at the images of the dice in the preorders page...
We can see all 6 result sides on the base dice
ImageBase dice are [1][2][3][4][5][+]

And on the Stress dice
ImageIStress dice are [@][2][3][4][5][+]
Note that both illos show the same number of dice, in the same orientations. Back row, 3rd from left, the 6 faces us... in both cases, it's the success symbol.

Nowhere does it says that only sixes on the base dice are counted as successes. Sixes on the stress dice are also successes
“When making skill rolls—including the immediate re-roll when pushing—add a number of Stress Dice to your dice pool equal to your current STRESS LEVEL. This means the stress actually increases your chances to succeed at skill rolls—it makes you more sharp and alert.”

Ah, my mistake.  I missed the part in the rules (pg20) where it says that BOTH Base Dice and Stress Dice have the crosshair symbol on the 6 side.  I read it as only Base Dice do.  That makes better sense now.
