Graphics that goes b--pffft.

Wed 07 Feb 2018, 15:43

Hi,
Having surveyed the alpha material, I can't help to notice that the graphics has very bad resolution and this makes the product look a bit sloppy. The images are also recycled material from a popular game from the 80ies rather than the fresh new material I was hoping you would provide. Is this something you plan to address before the final release?

Hmmm, I don't see a "very bad resolution" issue.  The PDF is reduced in resolution (probably to keep the filesize down).  When viewed at 100%, the images look perfectly crisp to me.  I've just opened the PDF for Tales From the Loop and Coriolis and they look exactly the same - low resolution images which look absolutely fine on a PC monitor, tablet and phone, which help keep the filesize of the PDFs down.  Low-resolution does not equal bad resolution.  If it was badly done, I would expect to see image artifacts at 100%.

As for the old material, the Kickstarter page states in the first section that "Forbidden Lands will contain both classic art pieces and new work by Gulliksson."  So seeing old pieces shouldn't really come as a shock, especially since older pieces are probably the first works of art to go into the book.  And it's the Alpha, so it's an early text with the earliest art available.
I make YZE games (https://drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matt%20Kay) and produce predominately Free League content on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@3skulls)

The whole idea with this project was to build it on these very old pictures but do something new and fresh with them. So when I got to write the setting, I started by looking at them and thinking about how to use them in a new context. It would be strange not to have them in the final game.

I see the point in making this reference but I also feel, after having viewed the result, that this is much less satisfactory than what I anticipated and I hope that the distribution between new and old images are reconsidered.

The bad resolution creates a weird unfocused haze over the images when they are placed next to the modern antialised fonts. This effect might be reduced by putting a filter over the font. Now you'll have a product which look consistently like it was produced in the 80ies ;-)

I think it would be sad if issues with the layout and graphical design would affect the outcome of this otherwise really beautiful product which seems like it's a blast to play!

I see no unfocused haze.  Can you give an example with a page number?

Remember, this is an Alpha - the images have not been treated yet, and while many look fine in the Alpha, some don't and these will be fixed. Also, art like this (black-and-white lineart) never looks that great on a computer screen. The printed book is where they really shine!

And yes, there will be more new art in the final game, but as others have pointed out, this game was designed with the classic art pieces as a core ingredient, so we're certainly not about to remove them. :)

This is consistent across all pages and in the nature of the images themselves. There's a black spill-off similar to what you get when you scan an image from paper. It just doesn't feel very modern. The images need more post-processing or they need to be made differently directly on a computer. Fria ligan consists of international acclaimed professionals, so they know all this of course, and it's just wishful thinking that make they think they can capitalize directly on old material. ;-)

I have no idea what you mean by "wishful thinking" in this case, but as I just stated, the art will be fixed in the final game. Again, this is an Alpha PDF. :)

Art is... art :) And therefore it's something that is very subjective. Perhaps you like it or perhaps you like it not. But as Brior and 9littlebees has pointed out the art pieces were there before they made the game, it's the inspiration of FbL. And as I have to confess that some pictures are very 80ies it's what makes this game what this game is :)

It's weird that OP is trying to imply that FL is lazy trying to reuse old images.
