Effects of darkness

Wed 05 Apr 2017, 17:01

I am trying to find details about the effects of darkness/blindness, but the only information I can find is that your Movement Rate is halved when moving in complete darkness.
Does darkness/blindness just give you -3 penalty to all tests that rely on sight or are there additional penalties like being unable to dodge or attack anything beyond certain range?

Hullo, Kaeam,

I was somewhat surprised to find that there were no rules on fighting blind or in darkness in the game rules, to be honest.  Basically, a -3 penalty to all tests would be my solution as well as the 1/2 Movement Rate, but I also think that other modifiers, depending on what the characters or NPCs are trying to do would be appropriate as well.  I would certainly say the modifier for the dodge would be at least a -3, and that you can't dodge ranged attacks at all (though cover, if you can get it properly might help).

Ymmv, of course. :)

I'd look to Mutant, those games have some rules for this.

Although you -3 and 1/2 movement isn't a bad solution either. :)

Hullo, Jegergryte,
Since I don't have Mutant: Year Zero, how about posting the rules from there about this here? :)

Quickly adapted to Coriolis:

With no light sources or gear that allows visuals in darkness the following would apply:
  1. You have to make a Dexterity check (Move in MY0) to move around.
  2. If you fail any check while in darkness you take one strain or stress, whatever its called; you lose one mind point basically. The darkness is scary as fuck. ;)
  3. You can only attack someone within Close range, and only after a successful Observation check (this Observation check does not count as an action in MY0 i.e 0 AP, although you could easily demand 2 AP for it in Coriolis so no deliberate (or normal) attack can be made in total darkness, unless they have the custom talent: Blind-fighter which makes this Observation check a 1 or 0 AP, and perhaps allows ranged attacks in total darkness up to short range...)

Hmm, having to make a successful Observation test to locate your enemy with your other senses is pretty good idea. Achieving a critical success could even negate some of the blindness penalty as you manage to pinpoint your enemy's location.
I would keep the Observation test as a free action with the option to spend AP on it to gain a bonus to the roll.

That's fair enough. Not a bad idea. :)

Hullo, Jegergryte,
Thanks for taking the time to post this. :)
I like Kaeam's idea on keeping the Observation test as a free action.
