Calendar

Thu 15 Sep 2016, 16:59

I recall reading a bit of information that, on Coriolis Station, there are three holidays in the year: celebration of the Founding, the new year, and another holiday which I have forgotten.
But when I check the G+ page, FB, KS updates, the comments, the novella of Coriolis, and the three sample chapters, I cannot find where I read this. Did I hallucinate this information?

I've worked out a calendar based on pre-Islamic Arabic timekeeping and based on 6 rather than 12; six months of sixty-six days each (a longer year than Al-Ardha—396 days rather than 365+1/4, but the effects of time doesn't remain constant when planet-hopping, and life expectancy is probably a bit greater than humans have on Al-Ardha). I've worked it so that each Faction has some in-house days of note, as well as various sacred days associated with each Icon. But I still wonder where I read the bit about the Founding, the Annular Day, and some other...

Any help in pointing me in the correct direction?

If anyone's interested, I'll post the calendar in its work-in-progress stage, and am open to suggestions as to its fine tuning.

Rpg.net perhaps?

And yeah, I'd like to see that calender.

From the book:
One Coriolis cycle (year) = 336 days.
The day is divided into four "watches" a' 6 hours (morning, day, evening, night...)
The cycle is divided in nine segments of 37 days each, and each is devoted to one of the Icons.
By the end of each segment there is a longer leave/leasure time. By the end of a triad (three segments) there is a feast/holiday:
The Founding, the New year, and the Pilgrimage.
Not sure I got "Pilgrimage" 100% correct in the translation. The book says "Pilgrimarian" and I've never seen this word before, I think it might be Coriolis-swedish! :)

Well, that ends my calendar. :)

I just altered it to have weeks for each icon and—like the Mayan Calendar—a six-day week at the end of the year to be used for leisure.
At least I've got some of the same concepts, if not length span.

From the book:
...

Touches like this is what I look forward to in reading this world.
This slower paced idea is much more Arabesque than Western Europe/UK/US culture. Don't measure things in singular hours, but times of day. Even if that day is on a space station. ;)

The cycle is divided in nine segments of 37 days each, and each is devoted to one of the Icons.
By the end of each segment there is a longer leave/leasure time.
36 days + 1 at the end of each so you can go to temple and pray.
By the end of a triad (three segments) there is a feast/holiday:
The Founding, the New year, and the Pilgrimage.
This is what I was remembering. Thank you.
While pondering my calendar, I thought about having years rotate with Icon, and since the Icons have several facets, it would be like the Chinese calendar of having the year of the animal (Monkey, Rooster, Dog, etc.) and element (Earth, Fire, Metal, etc.) This way the same combination only comes up every 60 years, in the Chinese calendar; with three facets of each Icon, the same every 28 years on the Icons calendar. I'm sure there will be some world in Coriolis that needs a calendar...
I like calendars. I like time keeping. Add relativity of how to keep time on a space station and after going through a jumpgate and, well:  8-)

Love words like that.

Btw I would very much like to see your calendar when done! It's perfect to use in some worlds to emphasize the cultural differences between places and people!

Are the three suns of the Algol system detailed in the book in regards to length of the solar year for the planet Algol?

I've been researching an exoplanet dubbed HD 131399Ab, which orbits around a trio of suns, two of which "dance" like Algol and Persei do.
Since I've already got three intrigues already plotted for Algol, maybe I could adapt my calendar to that system... the rebels who refuse the Zenithian Hegemony would try to maintain the First Come culture...
One "year" would be marked by Algol (the planet) orbit around the giant star of Rhass, while there would also be a non-aligned year of orbit around the binary stars of Algol and Persei. This would be a curious difficulty to address in time-keeping.

No, At least not in the basic rules. Algol is however one of the systems that Free League will detail later on. I have no idea if they started this yet, if you hurry you might be able to have a say and get your calendar implemented as cannon! :)

Btw, on the swedish forum the question came up what systems will be detailed in coming products (that some might want to avoid playing with to much, in fear of later cannon saying something else about the place). However if Algol would have circumstances not working with your ideas you can rest assure that there are a few other trinary systems! (Or just change the system to suit your needs I guess. I got the impression that you are not as lazy as me in this area! :) )

The systems that will be detailed are:

Kua
Zalos
Mira
Odacon
Dabaran
Algol
Pelarkvadranten
Sadaal
Taoan
Nharmada
Hamura

Other systems may be mentioned, but these are the 14 systems ("Pelarkvadranten" consisting of four) that will be fleshed out in detail. This leaves 22 systems to play with freely without risking to "overwrite" anything! :)
