"Personal Problems"

Wed 17 Aug 2016, 07:37

I noticed the skills section of the preview mentioned "Personal Problems" as something that can be activated by Darkness Points. I'm presuming these are issues such as persistent injuries/ outstanding debts/personal obligations/addictions/that thing you started with the Space Ninjas that both you and Coriolis Station security pray never reaches public records. That sort of thing right?

And if that's the case is it possible through character advancement to neutralize the Persinal Problem with experience points and roleplaying?

...except for the Space Ninja thing... what were we thinking?!?

I'm very interested in these mechanics as well – but would rather guess that these personal problems are character quirks/disadvantages that are supposed to foster roleplay, hence they'd be something you can "act out" (and possibly even gain experience based on doing that). As "quirks" would pretty much be character-defining, it would make sense to have a whole lot of options here on the one hand, and it wouldn't make sense if you could just erase them from existence.

Each character is asked to choose a "personal problem" such as having a shameful family secret or mortal enemy etc. Each archetype gives suggestions on what these can be.

The main gameplay role is more "hook" than "quirk" - they're yet another step of character creation meant to help the Games Master write engaging adventures with personal connections to the characters.

But the concept isn't entirely devoid of a mechanical consequence: as you might know, each PC can gain a maximum of five experience points after each session, and one of the five boxes you can "check" requires you to interact (have interacted) with your personal problem in some way (taking an otherwise unwarranted risk; making a personal sacrifice; etc).

In crude terms: choose a personal problem that will mess up your character's life a lot (=that makes it easy for the GM to come up with evil ideas on how to spend her Dark Points), so you gain up to 20% extra xp ;) :P

PS. I realize that a game written by native English-speakers might have chosen a better name for this feature than "personal problem". "Dark Secret" perhaps...

Well, 25% actually. :)

But, at the risk of having you translate the entire Swedish rulebook eventually, what are the five exp criteria in Coriolis (because Mutant has seven)?

And is spending those points identical to MYZ (basically everything costs 5 experience points)?

With the risk of Zapp answering this at the same time, the five criteria are:
* Did you participate?
* Did you succeed with a difficult challenge?
* Did you overcome a weakness or succeeded with something  you're bad at?
* Did you sacrifice or risk anything because of your "personal problem"?
* Did you sacrifice or risk anything for the character you have a close relationship with?
Titta vad jag gjort! / Things I've created:
Coriolis - talanger och referensmaterial
Symbaroum - Unsung Heroes of the Abomitorium
Ur Varselklotet/TftL - mysterier & spelböcker

Thanks!! It's all so prompt here.

*sigh* ... yup, those conditions as well sound much better than the present system in Mutant, which I had to discard because players were rioting.

Now, uhm, my second question regarding spending XP ...

Right, sorry, talents and skill points cost 5 xp each (and that's all you can spend xp on).

Ahhhh dammit. They should have changed that as well (like, skills 4 xp, talents 6 or 7, or even individual XP cost for different talents ... talents are so much more powerful judging from MYZ).

No limit on total number of talents, I guess?  :P

Right, no limit on talents, except that one type (Icon) can't be learned after the game starts and for group talents the entire group has to spend 5 xp each.
