Starting GM on FL, Recovering problems sleep, rest..

Tue 24 Mar 2026, 19:03

Hello,

After long time spent in The One Ring, and a full season (12 episode on The Walking Dead) I recently started reading the Raven Purge + all the background from the gm book, it's the best background I've read since long long time. Now I started reading the rules, with confidence as it should be the same more or less with The Walking Dead. Actually I am confused with this game for many points :

Recovery, in the early 40th pages says go and check P108 or something, who tells you go check the P40 something. Then you dig more and nothing explained, execpt you put a camp you heal everything in one night. Ok you spend a quarter day for a camp so I may understand even if healing everything is too easy. How you can heal lets say 4 point of empthy in one night ? If it was true then no one would suicide from being harassed and bullyied.

The question is : if PC sleep without a camp they must pass a roll check of endurance if i remeber well. But will they restore full points everywhere too ?
The 2nd question is : If PC take a rest, which is not sleeping, it says they recover slowly, but no numbers. What would apply here if I want to stick to official rules ?

My goal here was to play following the rules, i thought there are any rules like travelling, that are important part of the game and the stronghold, etc.. but sometimes it is hard to follow, often you find piece of rules, and then it won't be said again like the "light" features on stuff and weapon, explained at early intro stage, and not at the equipment stage where every features are explained. I find it very confused compared to The walking dead or even Vaesen.

From my side i really hate this easy recovery heal magic system even if you don't recover from critical but i will apply the rule, for sure at the biginning to see if it fits to my style of GMing. If not i already have some ideas like : you may recover only one attribute full, or you may recover 1 point in each attribute if you succeed in rolling survival, and each 6 gives you a recovery point to place on a selected attribute (or one of your key attribute to make the thing difficult).

For resting it is not granted a full recovery, in The Walking dead, you fully recover in one night at your safe haven. And :"A PC or NPC naturally recovers one point of Health each day, as long as they are able to consume one ration of food during that day. A PC that has no food cannot heal." This is clear. I will apply more or less this recovery : if you rest in a day after eating and drinking you recover 1 point, maybe on each attribute but i would prefer on your main attribute only.

But i am afraid my solutions are hard, but realistic, it may be too unbalance, depending on the difficulty of the game, and encounters.
It is not a critique, i mean i have read a ton of different games, the Free league books are very well written, and the style is very good (the Maligarn novel in Raven Purge is really good piece of litterature very inspired and i read it in translated french) the one ring is also confusing, after 3 years of play I am sure i did understand things in a bad way. The walking dead was may be the best rule book, clear and easy to follow.

How did you manage the recovery points in your games ?

In this game, damage to attributes represent temporary, very short-term injuries, like bruises, fatigue, fear or despair. These things normally is recovered fairly easy as long as you have plenty of rest and of course food and water.

The effect of become broken by any of this can be devastating, regardless of what attribute you are broken in.

Critical injuries, both physical and mental, are long lasting injuries that will take time to heal.

OK, the basic rules are the same in all this games, I understand the recovery idea for sleeping into a camp or your heaven, but there is still a missing data or resting is like sleeping, meaning you rest a quarter day you heal all your missing points ? there is no numbers in the book.
In the walking dead you heal 1 point a day, this is clear. may be it is a rule they forgot to put in the book and it is a basic from the system.
This is what I try to know or understand.

If you are broken in any of your attribute you need Recovery.
Page 108
Recovery
The fastest way to recover from being Broken is for someone else to treat you by rolling for HEALING (for Strength or Agility) or PERFORMANCE (for Wits or Empathy). This is a slow action, but cannot be performed with an enemy at ARM’S LENGTH. If the roll is successful, you immediately recover a number of points in the Broken attribute equal to the number of Successes rolled. Further rolls have no effect, and the same person can only try once. If no one helps you within D6 hours, you recover anyway and get one point back in the relevant attribute.
Further Recovery
Once back on your feet, you will recover all remaining lost attribute points by RESTING or SLEEPING for a Quarter Day (see page 144). This assumes that you are not HUNGRY, THIRSTY or suffering from another condition that blocks recovery.

ok thanks,
May be this is because there is no hit points, and affect the attribute and the dice rolls. I will wait session 1 to see how it goes.

Even with the same basis of rules games will look different, this is nice, in this game I will have to vary the kind of dammage so harming different attributes allows to put pressure in a different way than just hit points. Meaning a warrior will have strength but less empathy or spirit then he can be broken very quickly if I attack empathy, same for other classes, that's why the recovery is so easy ?

Ability scores go up and down easily in this game. Critical Injury from being broken is the thing that can get you. Being cold, hungry, or thirsty is a big deal some of the time that makes recovery impossible until it is fixed. Also remember the players are hurting themselves to get willpower points to use talents as well... those same abilities that went down are needed for skill checks. This can lead to a viscous cycle where it is very easy to get broken and fail your checks. Monsters will attack many attributes as well. If you live the fight without a critical injury you recover pretty good but the fights are scary as you get hurt more then continuing the fight gets even harder to win.

It makes combat exciting and anyone can go down at any time. If you recover very slow you basically need to heal up for a week before it is safe to enter another fight... or even hunt for food, water, etc. Even making camp to light a fire can be tough after a hard fight and if the monster made you cold then you are in trouble.

I recommend trying it as written first. The game has a very edge of the seat feel in combat with monsters.
