Hi folks,
i thought i'd post up some of the details of the campaign I'm about to start running. Hopefully people will find it entertaining and maybe even useful for their own campaigns.
The game is going to be set in and around Birmingham (the UK one, not America) as that is where my group are all based, localising the setting was one of the biggest selling points of the game for me. I've spent quite a lot of time building a detailed satellite map of the area from Google maps, I was surprised at how big an area 20 miles square covered. I'm giving serious consideration to giving this map to my players early on - i think it will help reinforce that the game is local for them, and it will make for a great game prop. I just need to get the 8MB file onto a USB stick and see how much Staples want to extort from me to get it to at least A3 if not bigger.
The players Ark will be my old middle school - I wanted to use the school they went to they mostly went to different schools. By using my old school I can better work out the details of the buildings, it's also about the right size and being a 1 story building it won't give them too much of a tactical advantage. To spice it up a little I'm going to blast a nice big trench through the middle of the main building - some kind of aerial or orbital energy weapon caused a lot of damage to the school, and along with the ravages of nature the whole thing will be in pretty rough shape.
The school is set in a lot of green space, at the outer perimeter has a low metal fence - again nothing too fortified. The green space will work well if they want to start farming. If they want to reinforce and patrol the fence, it's actually a large perimeter so they may need to compact things lest they find themselves over stretched.
Water will consist of a broken water main in the shower block - just a trickle, but clean.
I'm considering putting a network of sonic devices around the outside perimeter of the school. These would have been installed when the Ark was initially setup, and be known to the Elder. Their purpose would be to deter wildlife, but they wouldn't stop a determined attacker (4D Wits attack). They'd be powered by solar collectors which would need maintaining - something the Elder would tell the secret of to only his most trusted chronicler or gear head.
This has a couple of plus sides : If the group come across a network of these devices elsewhere it would tip them off that they were approaching another Ark, and it's also an indicator that their situation had been prepared for, they didn't just fall off a boat. The down side is its a Lost rip off - so I'm still pondering.
In my next post I'll put up some details of the Ark NPCs. Please feel free to post any feedback, questions or suggestions. Cheers
