A question about guard duty

Sun 12 Oct 2025, 20:57

A question about guard duty:
Since "a day consists of four periods: morning, day, evening, and night," and you have to rest after three periods, otherwise you'll suffer fatigue ("You need at least one period of uninterrupted sleep per day.
After three periods without sleep,
you can no longer recover HP or heal from conditions.") If I assume a standard day, I find myself in the 4th period where I have to sleep. But if someone wanted to stand guard, would they have to sleep in an earlier period (?) or would they sleep in a later period but already suffer fatigue?!?
Won't this slow down the passage of time? If someone had to rest before or after, as in the example given, I'd have two periods out of four to play with the entire group!?!?!
Am I missing something?

Morning: Travel
Day: Travel
Evening: One PC (or more in large groups), the rest do whatever they like to do in the evening (singing around or something). One (or more in large groups) stay guard).
Night: The PC that slept during the Evening stay guard.
Repeat.
This is a 12 hour travel plan, the normal maximum for a day.

Sometimes the PCs may want to travel for a longer period than two shifts or they might need to work at night, etc. But the players can come up with a temporary plan for those occasions.
