Do "weapons at hand" count for encumbrance?

Sat 23 Aug 2025, 12:09

On p. 93 of the core rules, it is stated that "[w]orn armor and delving suits don't count" against encumbrance limits. But what about weapons at hand?

In the corresponding paragraph, there is nothing that says they don't count, but I wonder if it is really intended that weapons have to be listed both in the equipment section and under "Weapons" on the character sheet. Even more so as in both the quickstart and Dragonbane, weapons at hand definitely don't encumber you.

Since the rules say:
Any weapons at hand (page 93), as well as any armor you wear, should be listed in their respective sections, while other equipment is recorded under Inventory.
That means that you aren't supposed to write weapons twice on your explorer sheet. Just as in Dragonbane. This needs to be clarified.

Thanks, I missed the line you cited (it's on p. 22, so not even close to encumbrance rules...). I agree that an official clarification would be in order.

I think so; weapons have a weight value.

You can have a weapon both "at hand", which makes it ready and easier to draw but also in your pack.

You are correct, weapons count against your carrying limit (STR +4), and that is why weapons at hand have a listed weight. Having them at hand signifies that you can draw, exchange, or put them away (kept at hand) as a free action (p 58).

Hope that helps :)

Thank you for the clarification. That means the pregen quickstart characters are all over-encumbered, even if leaving out ammo (which I understand no longer exists in the final version of the game).

Will there be an update to the quickstart in the foreseeable future? I would like to run it at my local game club, but I don't want to use outdated rules that no longer reflect what's written in the rulebook.

We will update the Quickstart, but unfortunately, I cannot provide an ETA. We're aiming for this fall.

Hi!
A question on capacity: All explorers receive a backpack for their mission, which means they should have a +1 on their capacity (STR+5). Does that mean that the basic STR+4 is you having all your stuff hanging around on yourself, and you add +1 to this to put everything in a backpack? Or STR+4 implies you have a « small » backpack, and if you buy a backpack from the equipment list, it’s a « medium » backpack adding +1 to your capacity?
