Alien: Earth and the rpg (Spoilers for the series)

Sat 16 Aug 2025, 17:23

MINOR SPOILER WARNINGS FOR EP1/2 OF ALIEN EARTH...

So, I've only seen the first two episodes so far and read a couple of spoiler free background articles, but how are we all incorporating Alien: Earth into the rpg background? Main points to consider would be:

1. The Five Companies - Weyland Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, Threshold and newcomers Prodigy, change the corporate landscape a little. I guess we'll learn the fate of Prodigy for sure, since they're the focus of the series, but what about the others? Also, Weyland-Yutani controlling North & South America, plus Mars and Saturn, and Dynamic controlling the Moon doesn't quite fit with the TWE / United Americas as presented (although I guess it doesn't massively contradict it either in a weird sort of way...)

2. The Maginot has been out in deep space picking up some..um...questionable lifeforms. The tag text suggests a 65 year mission - which assuming that means it's just COMPLETED a 65 year mission and is on its way back to Earth at the end of that time period (4 months left) - Weyland Yutani chartered this mission in 2055, which pretty much jetisons the prequel movies, cos Weyland and Yutani are still separate entities in 2091, and thats before we consider David's role in xenomorph development...

To be fair this is the only major point of contention. Having Weyland-Yutani know about the xenomorphs before the first Alien movie is fine, I always assumed they knew about them in Alien, at least in basic terms, although the information doesn't seem to be available to the review board (or Burke) in Aliens. Kirsch's speech about "You stopped being food..." is interesting as well. For folks concerned with a certain aspect of the "Rapture Protocol" adventure that I won't repeat here cos its the open section, Alien:Earth actually does present a solution....

3. Morrow's Arm seems a teeny bit too high tech, but I guess as long as it doesn't become a "swiss army knife" of gadgets, I can live with it. If the corporations can create androids, there's no reason why they can't create modified replacement limbs, but the whole concept of "cyborgs" and how one of the Maginot crew reacts to him suggests a degree of prejudice. How common are cyborgs and where does the hate come from? The Hybrids I guess I have less of an issue with, its not too dissimilar to how Blue and Marcus interact in "Cold Forge", but I do think that "downloaded consciousness" might present the same question as Star Trek transporters - Are you a copy and the original is killed...?

That'll do for starters. Thoughts?

Hi,

According to Noah Hawley the series stay in a different canon, "its own thing", "it takes place within its own timeline"

So, it is up for anyone to include these new Corps and events in its own world.

For me, there are thinks that I like and others don't.

I read the interview on your link, then I read his interview here on Hollywood Reporter:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie ... 235787276/

From there, it looks like he talked to Ridley Scott and decided not to use Prometheus and Covenant, but considering Prometheus "was" and "wasn't" an Alien movie at various points, I guess everything is up for grabs.

Most of the modern novels and rpg background is from "Expanded Universe" type stuff anyway, trying to tie the movies (including the sort-of-prequels), the Dark Horse comics (which contradicted Alien 3) together etc, so its a case of pick and choosing according to personal preference, as you pointed out. I'm just interested in how people are planning to use (or ignore) the new series, and if the rpg itself will incorporate it.

I like the new alien lifeforms and will definitely be using them where appropriate. I'm not a huge fan of the portrayal of the XX-121 in the show, so if the events live out I will specifically remove anything related to that from my game. It's the biggest timeline-breaking / canon-breaking element as well.
I'm not a fan of having the mega-corps overtly ruling the Earth, Luna, and the Sol System since I've always felt like they are the types of entities to profit from all sides of a conflict, and I also prefer large, bureaucracy-laden interstellar governments indifferent and blind to the shady activities of the corporations, but still positioned to seize those corporations if they play their had too openly. I am likely to use the interesting bits and play the rest off as mistaken info being relayed during the social studies lesson.
Some of the new tech from the show is interesting but much of it seems to advanced to fit in neatly, unless treated as some sort of an experimental version or prototype. Morrow's cyborg swiss army hand and Morrow's "Zorg ZF-1 Pod Weapon" being two of the biggest issues.
Much like Romulus, I think there are some gorgeous visuals and some neat ideas presented, but will have to invoke the heavy hand of Game Motherhood to sift out those elements I like from those that wreck the lore of the movies, books, games, and comics I already love.

Was discussing this on the Kickstarter comments, and I posted this:

Simplest fix is to have Yutani acquire the bulk of Peter Weyland's holdings around 2044, creating Weyland-Yutani, but having Peter fund Weyland Corp as an independent entity still controlled by him and his board with what's left of his personal wealth (kinda like Tony Stark spun off Stark Enterprises in the comics after he lost Stark Industries to Obadiah Stane). Am pretty sure Weyland Corp would be a major target for Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold as well, and we already know Weyland was engaged with various lawsuits and corporate shenanigans with Yutani.

Then the Prometheus stuff can go ahead without really affecting anything in Alien: Earth or later...

And Weyland-Yutani can grab whats left of Weyland Corp in 2091, when it ceases to exist as a corporate entity.

I'm actually kinda ok with the XX-121 stuff if it remains an isolated incident. Of course, we still have a fair few episodes to go, and that might introduce whole new complications...

Yeah, that's a pretty good fix, actually. Corporate history is full of mergers, splits, and re-mergers, so this works for me :)

MINOR SPOILER WARNINGS FOR EP1/2 OF ALIEN EARTH...
If I remember correct, the initial text scroll indicated that some of these tehnologies would not not succeed. That paves the path for the writers to create technologies that do not interfere with canon.

Given I think the show is dreadful, I'm just going to integrate it by ignoring it in my game entirely. Even Reddit is pretty lukewarm at best on the show so I'm far from alone on this.
