Hyperdyne and FTL Displacement Drives

Thu 24 Jul 2025, 05:07

Two questions. If you know either or both go for it!

Core book states that Hyperdyne makes prosthetics. Can they make artificial eyes too?whats that tech level like in ALIEN?

Maybe I missed this but Can a ship be tracked when traveling FTL?

BONUS: anyone know a good program to make internal ship maps?

I don't think the ALIEN setting we know of so far can do true high-level cyberware or bioware. (But the creation of it would be tumultuous and lead to lots of interesting events!) I have been an absolute cyberpunk junkie for over 40 years, so I've wondered this same question more than once, and been alert for answers in the canon. That said, recent breakthroughs in our real-world timeline would make it highly likely they'd have at least rudimentary nerve-control over cybernetics.

As far as I know, you can't exactly track ships in hyperspace, but ships don't change direction once they've entered hyperspace, so with a vector "likely destinations" could be extrapolated. (Of course, if willing to live with the delay, a ship that wants to keep its destination a secret could make multiple smaller jumps, instead of one efficienct one.) This sort of thing could lead to relativistic plot points that could be fun, nightmarish, or both.

Your best -- but probably not only -- bet for knowledge of tools for creating ship layouts is _ArthurDallas_. Just keep in mind that if you're not worried about aesthetics, all you really need is a diagram with areas and lines showing their connections.

Thanks Jeff, hi UscssRookie. It's the holidays these days, so we're a little less active on the forum.

1) I see the ALIEN universe as the BLADE RUNNER universe, and the two are together (in my view of things). In short, the development of androids (synthetics) is very advanced. The same can be said for the development of prosthetics for humans. Go all out, UscssRookie, invent whatever you want with cost tables for characters. Share it with us if you develop something.

2) I wouldn't detect a ship when it's in FTL drive. Ships are undetectable, but if it serves a story you want to tell, go all out, UscssRookie, invent the trick to detect ships in FTL. As Game Mother, you have the right to do what you want.

3) To create ship maps. I use MICROSOFT PUBLISHER. It's like copying and pasting current FREE LEAGUE designs; it takes me 1-2 hours per map (with the 1st edition ALIEN RPG designs). I looked at designs with the 2nd edition ALIEN RPG, and it works very well too. You can create templates quite easily to simplify your designs from one time to the next.

My son told me about software like FIGMA (ADOBE), which is a collaborative interface design tool. I'm not familiar with it, but it seems free. You need a small program like SCREENHUNTER FREE for the (very precise) copying and pasting steps in FIGMA (or with PUBLISHER), and you can start with the designs from CHARIOT OF THE GODS + DESTROYER OF THE WORLD + HEART OF DARKNESS to create designs like me with the 1st edition design.

Hyperdyne could easily provide a character with synthetic eyes. They've cracked the format for integration of hardware and wetware - see the MOX for a prime example. Several of the characters in the story Aliens: Tribes have technically enhanced visual or auditory implants. We have tech that enables a character to interface with anothers dreams, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that damaged eyes can be replaced or enhanced if you've got the pennies saved up. Maybe BioNational can lab grow a clone set that's as good as the originals if you can afford it.
