Explain vehicle combat (damage) to me like I'm 5 years old.

Sun 23 Mar 2025, 17:11

Ok, so last session (yesterday), one of the players started shooting at a truck with a sniper rifle.

+2 to hit, because of size (Wasn't moving), and rolled 4 hits.

So far, so good.

However, I started thinking about damage. Do parts have hit points? I can't seem to find anything about it in the rules. What happens if he penetrates, and does 6 damage (like he did in this case)? Do the different parts have hit points? What happens if he does more damage than the part has hit points?

(Luckily, he hit a passenger, so it didn't really matter, but for future reference, I'd like some input)

For penetrating hits only, if the damage done exceeds what is needed to destroy or incapacitate a component, the remaining damage continues to hit another omponent inside the vehicle <>
P.84 lists what happens with each component that is hit. With components that only can take a certain number of hits, like suspension, then any exceeding damage will go on (one row up on the table).

Ok, so... essentially, parts have *at most* the same hit points as the vehicle has reliability?
But they're not tracked individually?
So, if I hit the engine of a car that has 5 reliability (like everything in the game seems to have, for some reason everything is as durable as everything else) and do 3 damage, but in the next shot I hit the Suspension and do 2 damage, the vehicles reliability has gone down to zero and thus destroyed (or rather rendered inoperable)?

Am I reading that right?

And only Engine, Suspension and Tires/Tracks have a connection to the Reliability of the vehicle (ie. hit points)?
The Fuel, FCS and Antenna all just have 1 point of "HP", since at more than 1 point of damage, that damage destroys or damages the part and the excess damage moves on to another part.
And the Radio and Weapons have their own reliability, so their own "hit points"? (Although, it is stated that most radios only have 1 in reliability)
Passengers and cargo are resolved as separate hits, more or less, with their own durability or health.

Am I reading that right?

The specific component destroyed shows more or less why a vehicle breaks down. Sort of for flavour. Then, technically a component can be destroyed after the vehicle is has broken down.

It is a little bit like if you look at two old cars that doesn't work (Reliability 0). The problems with each car and the reasons the two cars don't work may differ even though the reliability for both is zero.

It is the same for characters. One character may be broken because he was shot in his left leg which is now broken, another because he was shot in his torso. Two different problems, but with the same effect both may be solved with a skill roll and some medicines. Like the two broken cars, one with a broken engine and one with a broken suspension, both can be fixed with a skill roll and some spare parts.
