Armor roll

Sat 21 Dec 2024, 10:47

Hey there, I'm confused about armor, I'd appreciate some help.

Let's say I got hit, damage is coming and I'm wearing a chain mail with 6 armor rating. A damage of 1.. just 1 damage.

I roll armor and it comes with 4 banes.. that means:
#1: My character takes 1 damage to strength AND armor takes 4 damage to it's rating becoming a 2 rating (6-4)
#2: My character takes 1 damage to strength AND armor takes 1 damage only to AR

I mean, how can a hit of 1 take all the durability of an armor? The base damage is 1 not 4..

If the base damage was 3.. and 4 banes came from an armor roll that'd mean only 3 damage to armor rating.. right?

I'm using option #2.. is it wrong? It limits the amount of damage to the armor and still armor degrades so fast!!

If option #1 is used then we'd need a Smith around the clock to fix every rock that we trip over. It'd be frustrating to have your armor degrated over minor damage.

It is option 1 that is correct.

The situation you describe is very rare. It is less than 1% chance to roll four banes with 6 dice. Most of the time, armours are worn down over time, a point here and a point there. These extreme results are fun and all to use as an example, but they rarely happen in game. In our group, we have played MYZ (which have a similar armour system) and FbL for six years and extreme results when it comes to armour only happened twice during that time.

This is a survival game, to have weapons and armour to be worn down and broken is part of that. When it comes to repair, well in a survival game it is just as important to have someone in the group that can repair things as it is to have someone that can hunt. Everyone have the crafting skill and rank 1 talents are cheap to learn and villages are fairly common so the PCs can even go to one of those and have the local craftsman repair it if they don't want to roll the dice themselves.

When something like that happens, I think of it as a defect revealed by the hit, e.g., something critical breaks, and a large section of armor falls away.

I'd describe it to the player as "that armour saved your life this time, but it really took a beating"
