Reading stats block

Wed 11 Dec 2024, 17:22

I have little problem with understanding stats blocks,
for example Wraith Owl from Monster Codex has "Talons 8/6(long), two attacks at the same target (free attack: one attack, 5 damage)".
Did it means Owl can make two attack one 8 dmg ( because of robust (I)) and second 6 dmg, both must target this same oponent. It also get third attack oponent don't have long weapon.
Did this third attack also must target this same oponent? Or maybe I'm wrong and owl can "switch" between dealing 8 dmg or 6 dmg with long trait and robust isn't count in into stats ?

tnx for help.

The Natural Warrior (adept) ability means the creature does 3 (d6) damage with unarmed attacks. Each level of Natural Weapon increases the damage die by 1 resulting in a base attack of 6 (d12). Having Natural Weapon III means the attacks become Long. The Robust feature then adds 2 damage to a single attack on its turn.

Thus, Talons 8/6 means it gets two attacks, one for 8 (which includes Robust) damage and one for 6. The Long property only comes into play when an opponent comes into range of melee without a Long weapon, so would unlikely get triggered during the Wraith Owl's turn.

That said, the free attack it gets from the Long property should do 6 damage, not 5, because Natural Warrior and Natural Weapon are both passive abilities.
