Path of the beast

Fri 22 Nov 2024, 02:56

RANK 3: You can send your animal to fight for you. If you spend a WP when it is your turn to fight, the animal will also fight and follow your orders for one round, at your turn in the initiative order. Roll normally for the animal's attacks.

So if I send my animal into melee to attack/kill a specific target, on his next turn what does the animal do? Will he retreat or continue attacking the target?

Also if you do down in combat with no more WP to get revived by the animal. What does your animal do? Will he just run away or stand on the sideline watching to see If you'll survive or not?

The rules say that the animal will protect itself, which means that it will probably dodge and back off.

But the GM should also have in mind that the animal works technically as an NPC and should be played as such. If it is attacked, it will defend itself but if you go down it might even attack, depending on the animal. This is totally up to the GM to decide depending on the animal and the situation. If you become broken, the animal is loyal to you so it will stay by your side until you become unbroken or you die. If you die, it will most likely leave you eventually.

The companion animal fights or does your bidding for one round per WP you spend/invest - IMHO handle it as if you can fully control it, and the animal might act as good as possible to fulfill your order; it is, however, an animal and will react accordingly, and once the "booked time" runs out it will back off, even flee if it's a dangerous situation, but still behave like a loyal companion.
If you go Broken in combat and you have no more WP to call the animal and heal yourself, it simply has no effect. The animal might even ignore your call if the situation is apparently dangerous for it, but otherwise act like a tame and loyal pet.
All GM's discretion, though.

I like this approach — your companion acts at its best for the WP you spend, but it’s still an animal with instincts. Once the “booked time” ends, it might back off, flee, or just chill like a loyal pet. Going Broken? No WP, no effect — even your best-trained buddy can’t help then.

It’s simple, balanced, and leaves room for GM discretion. Plus, just like choosing the right pet supplies, the more care and investment you put in, the better your companion performs!
