Dark for Dark Business Virtue

Mon 30 Sep 2024, 03:54

Hello - I am looking to get some clarification on the dwarven cultural virtue "Dark for Dark Business", pg. 83 of the core rulebook. The virtue states:
"When you are in the dark (at night, or underground) you are Inspired on all your rolls."

This does not seem to make sense to me. It says you are inspired on all your rolls which would seem to mean they add 1d to all rolls. I have asked others and they said that you can only get the benefit if you spend hope.. but that doesn't seem to make sense either. The core rule book on page 20 under Bonus Success Dice, it says:
"Most commonly, bonus Success dice are gained by spending Hope, or as the effect of a number of Cultural Virtues."

It seems to me that the rules are stating that the inspiration bonus success die is gained as part of the cultural virtue, irrespective of spending hope or not.

Anyone else have information on this? Has there been any clarification from Free League? Any information is highly welcome!

I've looked at the errata document (https://freeleaguepublishing.com/wp-con ... nd_FAQ.pdf) and it has no additional notes that pertain to your question. Barring further clarification, I think your interpretation is correct; no hope should need to be spent.

This is incorrect. Dark for Dark business makes you "Inspired", but inspired does grant 1d on its own, it makes hope spent grant 2d instead of 1d.

"Most commonly, bonus Success dice are gained by spending Hope, or as the effect of a number of Cultural Virtues."

- This refers to other virtues, that do grand 1d directly in appropriate circumstances: Against the Unseen, Untameable spirit are good examples here.
- As an extreme example, "Royalty revealed", the ranger virtues, doesn't give the entire company 1d on all rolls next round. It makes everyone inspired, so any hope spent gives 2d instead of 1d.

Nowhere in the rules does it say inspiration gives 1d.

"An Inspired Player-hero who spends 1 Hope point to get a Hope bonus gains (2d), instead of (1d)." - p20

Inspiration is a condition. If you are Inspired (usually granted to skill rolls due to a Distinctive Feature applying), then your Hope spend bonus increases from +1d to +2d.

"An Inspired Player-hero who spends 1 Hope point to
get a Hope bonus gains (2d), instead of (1d)." p20, CRB.

Dark for Dark Business means that you are Inspired on all rolls at night or when underground.

"When you are in the dark (at night, or underground)
you are Inspired on all your rolls." p83, CRB.

You need to spend Hope (while meeting the other criteria of the Virtue) to actually benefit from the Virtue. The reward is that you get +2d instead of +1d.

Ah, so I was forgetting how Hope works in conjunction with Inspiration. Always check for context!

Most importantly, you are inspired even on attack rolls! That’s the main point.
