First Look Alien RPG Second Edition (email)

Thu 19 Sep 2024, 16:20

I just received the email from FREE LEAGUE with the news of the upcoming kickstarter for the Alien RPG Second Edition ... the maps are fantastic ... we have the maps of the USCSS Fidanza + The mining colony of Jeremiah VI from the upcoming cinematic Rapture Protocol ... wow.

I put the 2 maps in a browser to see the details ... wow ... it's magnificent. We can see the air ducts very well and we feel well integrated into the places. Excellent work by the concept-artist Miska Fredman (thanks great work).

We can't wait to see the rest.

Agreed, 100% The maps look so atmospheric and cool, and I am really looking forward to the updated Stealth Mode rules and see how it all works with the miniatures they have planned.

I wonder what the mini sizes will be? I almost hope they are quite small, so that they fit well on a map, but I assume they will be 25-30mm, or thereabouts.

But yeah, I am very excited for this, and can't wait too see how all this turns out!
(Also, the image of the W-Y Dog Catchers in the e-mail is really cool).

Unsurprisingly, over at FB, a vocal minority of the fans are hating everything about the new stuff and the ideas and direction and whatnot, but that was expected. Hater's gonna hate, and hate-monger's gonna grift.

Haters are usually not that many, but they are most often very loud and they have a tendency to attract trolls every now and then as well. In some platforms more often than other (cough, fb, cough).

You're right Angelman. The first nature of a Hater is to be a hater so that's not going to change.

In the 2nd edition the core rules are not going to change (that much) except for a few things like Stealth Mode. We're going to have a lot of add-on rules and not a lot of removal (that's what I've read so far). Alien RPG fans shouldn't be scared.

My first look at the maps (what crossed my mind), I found them a bit childish. I like it when there are austere details and a lot of space between corridors and rooms. I found everything to be congested together (I'm a map-developer and everyone has their own style). But taking the time to look at the details, I finally like them a lot. It's a very very different style from other (usual) maps that's for sure. The maps are very beautiful. You feel like you're in the location and that's a great quality of those maps.

Sorry, not a fan at all of this new map design. I understand and like the size change (for minis use) but I prefer the old technical design, more creative and suited for the "vintage technology" of the ALIEN universe. I'll probably use also this new maps, but I'll change them in Photoshop with a CRT effect and shadows, to give them more grit and personality. I'm sorry to say this, but those designs look very anonymous compared with the "old computer" line style of the originals.

By the way, I'm not an hater, nor a troll. I have an Italian YouTube channel where I play almost only Free League products, with a lot of Alien RPG sessions (it's one of my favourite games and franchise). ;)

To discuss pros and cons in various topics is a good and healthy thing. The few "haters" that I have seen (in this topic) mainly dislikes that there is a 2nd edition coming out in the first place and then they write meters of text on that specific topic and standpoint. Connected to these guys are the bunch of joiners and yesmen that just agrees even though they not always have a clue what it is all about.

you seem to be very present in this topic Fanhorn (like a good policeman who makes a round of the streets to monitor the neighborhood) have things happened recently that have increased the watch ... or did you just want to share your opinion on this subject ...

p.s. I'm making jokes a little to tease you ...

By the way Dario, you have the right not to like the new design, no problem with that. It's not because you don't like something that you're a hater ... everyone's opinions are respected here. Angelman wasn't talking about anyone in particular so don't feel targeted.

In general on the Alien RPG forum, I find everyone generally correct and always within the limits of respect.

I do lurk on various platforms an have been a moderator for a long long while, so it is a bit of an occupational hazard to notice these behaviors. I have seen this being discussed on various platforms but I rarely read them and never take part of any discussion, that never ends well (and that sort of things can bite me in the arse if I do).

On this forum I don't care what standpoint people have when they are discussing thing as long as they discuss with courtesy and respect and of course stay on topic. Other than pure rule questions, I can't actually discuss things that much over here since I am the only active moderator (to moderate myself just feels weird and probably not fair).

You are absolutely not a hater, Dario. My statement could be seen as claiming everyone who prefer Alien RPG 1 or the old "computery" maps to be "haters" and "hate-mongers". As Arthur Dallas pointed out, that was not my intention. We all prefer different things, and even I took a few minutes to "get" and internalize the new map look (ultimately finding that the added details, especially in the colony map, will help greatly in carrying the atmosphere - I like that I don't have to look up what a room is, but can more easily than before instantly recognize the core function of a room). Also, to be fair, the old green-out computer map designs are very cool; no doubt about that.

My bad for being unclear. It is, as the others mention, the matter of (a lack of) decency and respect, and the general conduct that make haters stand out. It can also be a bit irritating when lots of people's knee-jerk reaction to anything new is to automatically hate it, even when we know nothing about the products yet. It's such an easy, low-bar go-to reaction these days, that I sort of forgot to nuance my statement (which, in itself, is rather lazy).

I know exactly what you mean, Fenhorn. I'm a moderator at one of the main, unaligned Star Wars forums out there (Star Wars News Net's Cantina), and it is not the most fun job to have anymore. I'll leave it at that.
