Clarifiactions about the core box rules

Sun 08 Sep 2024, 12:46

Just got the core box and played a few solo games.
Really enjoy the simplicity and beer and pretzel feel to the game.
Unfortunately, some rules and wordings are a bit unclear at times (and it might be due to English not being my native language).

1) Movement (p.6) says
A model can turn as many times as it likes as it moves, but it must follow a defined path....
Does this mean that you need to move along the Measurement ruler or can you change direction?
And if the model can change direction, does it only count in increments of Close movement sections?

2) When making a move/sprint/charge it mentions that the Move may/may not cross models/terrain. What exactly is the move and how are you measuring it?
I know this is a bit of a detail question. Is it the measuring template that may are to taken into account for when crossing things or the model's base?
If it is the model's base, are you supposed to move the model along the center of the measuring tool?
Just want clarification.

3) When making a Step move, how is that supposed to be measured?

4) Can you cross over friendly models when making a Charge?

5) When making a Sprint, the facing of the model remains the same as when it started the Sprint, correct?

6) Am I correct in thinking that you can't take damage from Pushing when doing an Improvised attack?

7) No models start the game with M-points as far as I can see. Or did I miss this in the book?

8) When a model is Taken out and drops it's artifacts, are you supposed to place the cards on the spot it was standing or an artifact token?
Placing the cards instead of a token there seems a bit strange.

9) Am I correct in thinking that the Landshark and Zone ghouls cards remain for the rest of the game after being drawn?

10) Mutation & Modules - Enhance:
These cards can be triggered by an activated model as part of making
another action, increasing the effectiveness of this action in some way.
It is allowed to activate several Enchance mutations/modules in
the same action, or Enhance abilities in the same action as an Action ability, but m-points
must be paid separately for each.
A) Can they only be used by a model that has already been activated? or is it supposed to be the activating model?
B) Are they activated in addition to the normal action taken by the activating model?

11) Human plant / Venomous bite: What does Unarmed meele attack actually mean? Is it an Improvised melee attack?
The rulebook does not seem to mention Unarmed meele attacks.
Can the models attacked with these powers make a Counterattack, since they were the target of a melee attack?

12) Malleable: The model can move through Blocking terrain but not Low terrain while charging. Is that correct?

13) Insect wings: The power says
...and fires Aimed from there and then lands on the same spot.
So it moves and the fires an Aimed shot, correct?
The wording is a bit strange there.

14) Climber: Can I activate this power in the middle of a Move during a Move & Attack action?
The power mentions that
The vertical move can occur at any point during the action...
In other words, can I:
- Start my Move and move 1".
- Activate the mutation to move Long across a piece of terrain.
- Continue my Move for the rest 4"

15) If yes, how does that work in case of making a Charge, Sprint or even Aimed fire?

16) Sprinter: Can a model with this power use it in addition to it's regular action, in effect getting an action + the Sprint power?
Or does it replace the normal action for the activating model?

Thanks :)

1) Movement (p.6) says
A model can turn as many times as it likes as it moves, but it must follow a defined path....
Does this mean that you need to move along the Measurement ruler or can you change direction?
And if the model can change direction, does it only count in increments of Close movement sections?
This simply means that you can turn to any direction and move part of your movement and then turn again to any direction and move the rest. You can move part of your movement in one direction, then turn 110 degrees and move the rest

When charging you can't cross any obstacles along the way and you can't turn. An obstacle is something that low (lower than the model), such as a very low wall and can normally be crossed with anormal move, but not with a charge.
When you sprint you can only move in your front arc direction and you are not allow to change facing after you have moved. Otherwise sprint follow the same rules as normal movement. So if you want to sprint in a U, you can as long as you turn max 90 degrees each time you turn.

3) When making a Step move, how is that supposed to be measured?
A step move is one base so use either just use your eyesight or use the base of an unused model. The idea with this move is that it is used to do minor adjustments and corrections to the model, that it is max 1 base width will rarely come into play.

4) Can you cross over friendly models when making a Charge?
Friendly characters doesn't count as obstacles.

5) When making a Sprint, the facing of the model remains the same as when it started the Sprint, correct?
You are allowed to sprint in any direction in your front arc, that means in any direction in your 180 degree front arc, but whatever direction you sprint in, that is the facing you will have at the end of the sprint.

6) Am I correct in thinking that you can't take damage from Pushing when doing an Improvised attack?
No, so it is recommended (in the rulebook) to always push those rolls.

7) No models start the game with M-points as far as I can see. Or did I miss this in the book?
The M-points you have is a pool that any of your character can use. How many M-points each player start with, varies from scenario to scenario, but is often 1.

8) When a model is Taken out and drops it's artifacts, are you supposed to place the cards on the spot it was standing or an artifact token?
Placing the cards instead of a token there seems a bit strange.
Place the artifact token(s) where the model where and place the cards nearby.

9) Am I correct in thinking that the Landshark and Zone ghouls cards remain for the rest of the game after being drawn?
The Zone Ghoul card is a one event card and is discarded after it has happen. The Landshark on the other hand will remain for the rest of the game (which will turn the game into a variant of 'the floor is lava' game.

Yes, you can use as many Enhance mutations that you can afford. A) Only the activating model is doing actions and B) whatever mutation a model is using is done so at the same time as the action it enhances.

11) Human plant / Venomous bite: What does Unarmed meele attack actually mean? Is it an Improvised melee attack?
The rulebook does not seem to mention Unarmed meele attacks.
Can the models attacked with these powers make a Counterattack, since they were the target of a melee attack?
An unarmed melee attack is an attack without a melee weapon (artifact card or starting card). This is called improvised attack.

12) Malleable: The model can move through Blocking terrain but not Low terrain while charging. Is that correct?
Technically that is correct. Although it sounds a bit strange to me, maybe an oversight.

13) Insect wings: The power says
...and fires Aimed from there and then lands on the same spot.
So it moves and the fires an Aimed shot, correct?
The wording is a bit strange there.
The idea with this effect is that you fly up (so you get a better view), do a ranged attack, and then you and on the same spot as where you started.

You activate climber when you declare that you will move. The climbing effect can take place at any time during this move, so yes, you can move bit, climb up to long and then move the rest.

15) If yes, how does that work in case of making a Charge, Sprint or even Aimed fire?
Climber doesn't prohibit any of these things, so this means that you can start your charge, use climber and climb up one level (for example) and then continue (in the same direction) or You can use climber to climb up one or two levels and then use your step move and do an aimed fire. Isn't it great to be a mutant :D
16) Sprinter: Can a model with this power use it in addition to it's regular action, in effect getting an action + the Sprint power?
Or does it replace the normal action for the activating model?
You can use sprinter to sprint 30 (e M-points) and then do a normal move & attack. Amazing isn't it 8-)

When charging you can't cross any obstacles along the way and you can't turn. An obstacle is something that low (lower than the model), such as a very low wall and can normally be crossed with anormal move, but not with a charge.

Does not fully answer my question though.
So it is the model's base that need to clear the terrain when charging? since the measuring tool you're using have no real impact.

So models can Counterattack them as well? as long as they're attacked in the front arch.

16) Sprinter: Can a model with this power use it in addition to it's regular action, in effect getting an action + the Sprint power?
Or does it replace the normal action for the activating model?
You can use sprinter to sprint 30 (e M-points) and then do a normal move & attack. Amazing isn't it
But is the power Move Long per M-point spent and perform a normal action or Move Long per M-point spent?
In the first case it would give the model up to three long moves + Normal action in addition to the normal action of the activation.
In the second case it would give the model up to three long moves in addition to the normal action of the activation.
It's only a question since it is an Enhance power and they are usually in addition to the normal action of the activation.

And thank you for taking your time answering my questions :)

Does not fully answer my question though.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, sorry. My answer was how move, sprint and charge works. You are clearly asking about something else, but I don't know what that is.

So models can Counterattack them as well? as long as they're attacked in the front arch.
A counterattack can be made by a model if he is attacked in melee and survives. It doesn't matter with what he was attacked. This is one of the reasons the 'Knockback' effect of certain weapons can be very good, it moves the attacked model away so it can't counterattack you.

The card say that it allows the model to move long distance per M-points spent and then after the has done so he can do an action. So he can use Sprinter with 3 M-points, move 3xlong (i.e. 30'') and then after that charge another model which technically means that he just made a 40'' long charge.

It says that a model charging can not cross terrain, so it is then the base of the model that may not cross the terrain?
Yeah, that must be the case, since the measuring stick supplied with the game does not really matter.
Nevermind.

So models can Counterattack them as well? as long as they're attacked in the front arch.
A counterattack can be made by a model if he is attacked in melee and survives. It doesn't matter with what he was attacked. This is one of the reasons the

'Knockback' effect of certain weapons can be very good, it moves the attacked model away so it can't counterattack you.
It does not say that you can't perform a Counterattack if you get Knocked back though? Or should it be written into the rules that a model can only perform a Counterattack against a model that is still in base contact? It currently does not say anything about that, but I can see it being the intended way of handling it.
But is the power Move Long per M-point spent and perform a normal action or Move Long per M-point spent?
In the first case it would give the model up to three long moves + Normal action in addition to the normal action of the activation.

Not really. The card says that "The model moves Long distance horizontally per m-point spent and then perfoms a normal action".
This makes it sound like that whole part is the power. And since Enhancements are used in combination with actions or in addition to, the wording makes it sound like you can use the power and still do a normal action.
I get that it is not the intended effect of the card, but a good thing to clarify :)

Thanks again.

Re: Clarifiactions about the core box rules

The intention with the counterattack rule (which is in the melee attack section of the rules b.t.w.) is that if someone attacks you in melee (base to base), even with a ranged weapon (you are allowed to use a pistol even in melee), you can counterattack that person if you survive. If you are pushed back thanks to knockback, you are no longer in melee range and you can longer do a melee attack (which counterattack is part of).

When it comes to enhance mutations, since they can be used with other actions, they also say how if mutation has some restrictions with the enhance. Human Plant for example, allows you to do an Unarmed Attack (i.e. Improvised attack) against M-points models within medium range. The unarmed attack is the action that is enhanced and is the models action for the round. The mutation simply enhances it. For Sprinter, you are allowed to whatever action you like with the model, but the enhanced part (sprinting) happens before you do. That is the reason it is written this way. You can't do your action and then use the sprinter effect. You must use the Sprinter effect and then your action for the round. Some enhance mutations doesn't say with what action you may use the mutation and then there are no restrictions, like with Frog Legs. You can jump with Frog Leg as part of your move & attack or as part of your simple operation (charge is mentioned on Frog Legs because charge has some restrictions to it when it can be used and Frog Legs doesn't break that).

Found one more question, but an easy one.

When you pick up an artifact token and draw an artifact card.
Is it placed face up or faced down (or can you pick)?
12) Malleable: The model can move through Blocking terrain but not Low terrain while charging. Is that correct?

Technically that is correct. Although it sounds a bit strange to me, maybe an oversight.
This might need to be double checked and put in an errata then.
Sounds really strange :P

There are no hidden abilities, mutations or items in this game, unless specified by a scenario.
