Melee combat follows like this. This was clarified by Tomas for Alien, but the concept is the same in MYZ.
1) The attacker declares his attack.
2) The defender declares whether he wants to defend or not.
3) The attacker make his skill roll (and pushes if he wants to), then chooses stunts if they rolled more than one successes.
4) If the defender has declared that he will defend, he now make his skill roll and chooses his stunts. If the defender chooses to eliminate the attacker's successes, the attacker loses his successes (and can loose his chosen stunts).
5) The results of the attack and the defense are implemented simultaneously. If the defender chose to counterattack as part of his defense, the two attacks occur at the same time. If any of the combatants are disarmed, any attacks made by them counts as an unarmed attack.
This means that if the attacker misses, the defender can safely spend his successes on other things than to eliminate the attacker's successes since there aren't any.
