Attributes and skills, mixing and matching

Thu 11 Jan 2024, 04:19

I'm preparing to run the game, and I'm considering the possibility of mixing and matching different attributes and skills in certain situations, when it would make sense. An example would be someone with fight or marksmanship skill could use the skill + Wits when trying to figure out a weakness or pattern in an adversary attack, possibly to get a bonus in a later roll. Or maybe with craftsmanship + wits, to understand how some structure was made or how a craft works (since strength would not help in this case at all).
Anyone tried something like that, or any insights on this?

Well, I would not mix skills and attributes beyond the "original" combinations, despite the logic your idea has. It's because FL assumes that, if a PC has some relevant knowledge through an appropriate Skill or Talent, the task at hand simply works - or just not. Dice are only supposed to be rolled in relevant situations; for instance, there is no roll to passively find a hidden door (see PHb p. 54) with Scouting or follow a track (with whatever Skill would be appropriate). Rolling dice for anything is not part of the game's design. Let players only roll dice if they want to achieve something, where success or not has consequences.
