mends wounds on horror table?

Sat 27 May 2023, 08:40

Hey Guys!
Just a quick question:
Does mend wounds work on the critical injuries from the horror table?

The spell says, it immediatly heals a critical injury of any kind.
Broken bones, bleeding wounds etc. But psychic injuries are still injuries right?

Otherwise the whole healing ability magic stuff has a big weak spot. I mean, why
can I shoot fireballs from my hand or resurrect the dead but can't heal someone who got insane or claustrophobic?
It doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the help!
Greetings from Germany!

If we look at how it is written:
You can use magic to heal broken bones and bleeding wounds.
and that the spell use white moss as an ingredient, then the answer is no. But it is up the GM to decide this. If he feels that such spell is needed he can of course allow it.

I should say that this is my interpretation of the spell based on how it is written.

So let me get this straight:
I can resurrect my fellows, use powerfull magic to bring them back to life, interfere massively in the way of nature...but can't heal their horror injuries?

"Sorry bro, i brought you back to life, but that claustrophobic trauma...you gotta figure that out by yourself! See ya!" *Casts a spell and flies magically away*

The Devs/Creators should take a carefull look at their phrases.

As I said above:
I should say that this is my interpretation of the spell based on how it is written.
Even though I do know the answers to rule questions sometimes which was the reason I added the line to make it clear that this is my interpretation on how the spell works and not the game designers answer.

Agree that Mend Wounds has a contradictive wording, but the examples suggest that it is intended to stop a critical physical wound (since it heals no damage/restores points). There's AFAIK no errata to it, and the Reforged Power supplement gives the short description "Heals a critical injury.", so that I am inclined to include critical mental wounds through Wits and Empathy, too. But that's a personal point of view, too, and it's only based on the unclear wording and an "innocent until proven otherwise" attitude.
Not being able to cure mental damage (not the "points themselves", rather the indirect trauma caused by the impact) makes sense, though - and a good basis for roleplaying! After all, the spell is called "Mend Wounds" and not "Mend Psyche" or "Mend (generic) Critcal Damage". However, another idea could be to introduce a "mirror spell" for Mend Wounds just like Cleanse Spirit/Healing Hands, which are technically the same, just affecting different attributes and requiring different ingredients? Maybe only single druids know about it, or it can be found in a book?

Strangely it never came up in our campaign, but this is most likely what I would have done if it would have come up.

Neither in ours, we just had some severed feet and traumas through the use of magic, but no critical wounds on Wits or Empathy.
