Artificial Gravity

Tue 07 Mar 2023, 03:05

Hullo, folks,

This is going to seem like a dumb question, especially given how long I've been running this game for now, but...

I've been searching the game rules and supplements for information on the subject, and can't find a thing about it. I believe that artificial gravity exists in the universe of Coriolis - The Third Horizon, otherwise how would 1G exist on space stations and the like, but I can't find a reference to it at all. What am I missing here?

Thanks, in advance. :)

I finally managed to kick off a campaign (as opposed to short 2-3 session games) and this came up. I had already made the decision to make AG a function of the reactor but then *another* topic came up about transponders. On page 163/4, there is a description of Silent Running that has the sentence:
"With the reactor shut down, the ship is “dead” – you lose all your Energy Points and cannot change course, use weapon systems or active sensors. The artificial gravity onboard is also lost."
hth

On a related note, I do wish there were another expanded sourcebook for Coriolis covering more ships and gear and clarified or optional rules. I know its rules light and I love it, but it would be great just to have expanded resources for those longer campaigns

i was wondering about this as well, and i was thinking of making it a function of the graviton projectors - such as there being smaller ones placed in the floors over the ship, incapable of more than of, say, maximum 2G.

Hmm...interesting. (Just looked at the section of the book in question that you mention above.) I would have thought it was the graviton projectors that provided the ship with gravity, not the reactor, though I suppose this means that it's the acceleration of the ship that provides gravity aboard. But that doesn't really help in terms of the ship at a stop. Unless the reactor has a side effect, though that's not how text on the reactor and the graviton projectors read.

I really wish that someone from Free League who knows the answer to this would appear in the discussion and talk about this subject! :)

Totally agree with you! :)

Yeah, I also would have thought it was part and parcel of the graviton projectors, rather than the reactor.

Your suggestion above is almost like...gravity plating, that has been seen on some sf tv shows in recent years/decades. :)

Still wish someone from Free League would appear here and address this matter! :)

Ummm... no?

It just means that whatever is providing the artificial gravity needs power from the reactor.

It's not that the reactor itself provides the artificial gravity, or that it's the acceleration (the floorplans certainly do not reflect anything like that).

i already put it as a function of the gravprojectors, has worked just fine and omits the need for another, separate, mechanism for the players to keep track of. :)
