Ideas for a Whispering Halls adventure

Thu 02 Mar 2023, 17:15

Hi fellow LM's,

I'm looking for some ideas and inspiration for an adventure in the whispering halls so I hope you can help me;).

Im working on fleshing out a rather long campaign, starting in Bree using the first two adventures from the book for 1e and then moving to ruins of the north adventures, weaving them togheter probably with the black numenoreans plot (the last adv. from Ruins could work really well with Usaphton dealings in Tyrn Gorthad).

With that said, I am thinking about a way to remove the curses from the ring of seven jewels form Bree book 2nd adventure.
The basic idea is that the rangers will escort Berelas to Rivendell where Elrond and Damron will be able to remove some of the spells cast on the ring by Gorlanc, but not the shadow curses.
If the heroes shows interest (they will, Im sure;)) and investigate they will discover that the only way to remove all the curses from the ring is to bring it to mount doom and...errr the whispering halls where it was forged in the first place, restart one of the forges, unmake the ring and reforge it (Damron will probably go with the heroes to do his stuff).

I plan to have the cold shade make a last appearance during the unmaking but I would like some suggestions about including Aiwiel (from rivendell book) in the plot and maybe a cool plot twist or two.
Also i'll probably have some encounters with black numenoreans scouting the are if the time is right.

Any suggetions?
Many thanks!

Hi!

Quite interesting. What about using the ring-lore skills of Nethig, the slumbering elf in Swanfleet, in the Hill of the Sleeper?
She would be qualified to use the forge and remake the ring... And that would make a whole subplot to resolve for the party before going to Eregion.

I like the original idea and the suggestion above, great stuff! Nethig is a great fit if you're expanding things out. I like involving Black Numenoreans too.

Cool twists/bringing some intrigue/politics in to things: as a (lesser) foreshadowing of the ring quest and the debate over destorying it or using it for different purposes, could there be different groups within the Free Peoples and among Elrond's advisors that argue for its destruction, or its use for various ends, or who have claims on it?

The ring itself - worth adjusting the mechanical boost? As Attributes matter more in 2e than 1e (which I like!), so I'd want to keep the ring cool and special (making it worth all the work removing the cures!), it might be worth tweaking its power down a bit? It will still be very worthwhile.

You know what? It's a great idea.
Actually, I didnt plan to go south all the way to Tharbad (actually, not a big fan of the city itself), so I just glanced at some of the landmarks in the area and didnt really read them...and I was missing out a reelly nice story here!
It could work. Bringing the elf maiden to the whispering halls would be a nice challange.
And what about something like this: she cannot reforge the ring in her current state. It will take too much time, time she does not have as she will die during the process.
So the only way is to cure her, something that elrond would probably be able to do...but you need to bring her to Rivendell...

I can see a chase here: the fellowship will be chased by black numenoreans, orcs, trolls whatever...

Thanks for the suggestion mate!

Yes, using Nethig would be really cool.

Uhm, well I do like some politics, but let's take it more on a personal level here...who can rightfully claim the ring?
I would go with Aiwiel. The ring was forged for her/belongs to her family. I reaaally want to involve her in the plot...the way I imagine her is to be, well, somewhat deranged, and overcome by sorrow.
What would she do then? Oppose the fellowship doings? Aid them? Both? so many possibilities here...

About the ring itself, yes I was planning to adjust it, it's way too strong for 2e TOR.
I was thinking something like this: gives +1 to one attribute of choice. It will also give a blessing to a skill group, chosen when you acivate the ring. Every dawn it will reset and you can choose a different skill group or the same.
Maybe still a little too strong? Well IT IS a minor ring of power after all...

What do you think?;)

You're welcome!

Actually I'm running a campaign which started in Bree... and includes scenarios from Ruins of the North and Landmarks from V2 - It's interesting to exchange ideas.
For instance I expanded on Berelas and Gorlanc, but the ring is still held in Rivendell in our story, so that's a thread I could pull.

Aiwiel is indeed interesting, you're right.
About the chase, the Black Numenoreans coud really use the opportunity of Nethig's cure to discover Rivendell.
Another player that might get involved is Saruman - he is eager for ring-lore, so the sole existence of Nethig should be of great interest to him!
He controls some clans for Dunland, that should be tough opponents, with obscure motivations.

I'm running a 2e campaign with 1e source material at the moment. All of the action has been east of the Misty Mountains until the current adventure, where the party has accompanied Gandalf and Balin as far as Bree (Gandalf and Balin have continued on to visit Bilbo in the Shire). The company was exited to catch up with Tom Lumpyface and now they're in the middle of Old Bones and Skin.

I was planning for them to play through Strange Men, Strange Roads if/when they next visit Bree, which probably won't be for a few game years. My thoughts on the ring were that Nethig made it and gave it to her lover (not Celebrimbor). Hirlinon and Berelas found the ring with the lover's body, on the edge of Swanfleet. Aiwel could be the lover's sister. Nethig could remove the curses on the ring if she is healed. At the moment I can't decide whether the ring could be used to heal Nethig (Berelas uses it to help with healing in Strange Men, Strange Roads), or whether only Elrond has the power. But if the company does start poking around asking questions about magic rings, they are also likely to cross paths with agents of Saruman.

I'm also not sure about letting the players get their hands on the ring. If they do, I would agree that it needs to be nerfed a bit for 2e.
Blistering barnacles!

My players also took the seven stars ring on. In their case, I had them travel to the ruins of the forges of the elven smiths in the ruins of Ost in. Edhil.

Now years later they told Saruman that the forges were still viable and he has left Isengard to investigate rings in the ruins.
