Or.. Which 1st Edition books would be best suited to supplementing the 2nd Edition for adventures in and around Tharbad?

To my knowledge (which admittedly might be faulty), there are no books that cover Tharbad or surroundings. The closest would probably be Bree and Rivendell (+ Ruins of the North). And to the south it would be the Horse-lords of Rohan (+ Oaths of the Riddermark). Adventurer's Companion has some general information that might be useful.
And as hard to find as they are, there are probably some MERP books that might have some information.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm flying slightly blind here, as I've only read the appendix to Ruins as I'm playing in a game using it.
But I've seen other people mention some parts of Ruins of the North as tying in well to the activities of the Black Numenoreans in Ruins of the Lost Realm, so I hope that helps.
Seconding @Xelforp - this wasn't an area that 1e went in to much at all really. But passing on things second hand, there's stuff you can link it to in Ruins of the North, but I think it might be "here's what the Black Numenoreans have stirred up throughout Eriador" rather than Tharbad specific stuff.
As I type, it occurs to me that we're investigating Black Numenorean spies/agents in a game I'm playing in - "The Company of the Wain" from 1e could work well as representing some of their various agents, and then a bunch of the other adventures work as undead/orcs etc they've helped stir up. But not Tharbad specific, sorry.

Yes and no. In principle you're right: MERP covered Tharbad quite extensively (especially
Thieves of Tharbad), but all that in a time when it was still a bustling city in a functioning realm -
Thieves of Tharbad in the early 15th century T.A. and more generally in T.A. 1640.
It had some lines on its state in the late Third Age (ruined), but that was not much.

I'll take a look at that, I've got the pdf of Ruins of the North... I'm hoping to base my campaign in Tharbad and have the group use it as a base for further exploration around the surrounding areas.
