Bloodmarch location placement

Mon 07 Nov 2022, 17:15

I know that you are supposed to place the Bloodmarch locations where ever you see fit.
But I still can't help myself from trying to figure out where they most likely would fit. So if you are like me, what are your thoughts about the different locations?
Here are my takes:

Ashenstead: Hex under "en" in "Ashenvale"
- it "breaks the monotony of the Aslene plains", and this is the only settlement with only plains surrounding it.
- it is likely a fairly central hex, since the location is important to all clans, and this seems like a good spot.
- the Sabirians and Quards are meeting there, and this location is located in between them, so could be an acceptable meeting spot for them. The Galdanes are also a bit weakened so that can be why they haven't a noticeable influence over it.
- it is not too far away from Taregyll, which eases that first fetch quest.

Salterstay: Village in between the Sabira volcanic crater and Clodewoods
- it should be a village next to mountains and next to a river or river/sea and this does
- bonus as it has forest and even nearby crimson forest
- the crimson forest originated in Havenmark, infested with Blood elves that probably were the previous elves that lived here, so likely the home of Kasabatoda. Kasabatoda travels here, so the distance should probably not be too far and looks like he can stick to some forests on the way.
- Kasabatoda enters the village not from the forest, but from the top road, this is one of the few places where this fits.

Oxengelder: Village over Heldstowe forest, closest to the "e" in "Heldstowe".
- We know that Poansa "crossed Gander’s Pass on secret paths from Alderland and continued to Oxengelder, where Poansa met with the Dreamstress", then left her double there. But then: "Poansa is sweeping the country from south to north. The adventurers may run into one of her spies before they even leave Taregyll, but their first encounter with Poansa herself will not take place north of the Wailing." So we can conclude that Oxengelder is south of the Wailing.
- We know that Varina is avoided by the clans "who think it lies beyond the domains of the volcano god Horn". And why is it not Horn domain? It could be because of limestone (non-volcanic) ground and we know that Oxengelder is situated on just such land.
- It should be next to mountains "From the top of the mountain slopes behind the dream school".
- And there is so much water coming from the mountains that it is likely a stream will start here, although it may not need to be the school gate fountains, more likely that it if so converges and forms into a bigger river.
- Not to close to the home of Vaerefor van Reiben, and if he is based in Havenmark(?), that that fits too.
- Why not: Well, it is perhaps strange that you encounter Grudenstaal here, after just seeing him in Taregyll, as they are far from another. But if the PCs can travel so can he, I guess.

Bann Guelder: Village closest to "K" in Kodra, alternatively "a" in Kodra, (alternativley "A" in Ashenvale, but not as likely - as it is further away from both the dwarves and the Sabirians).
- "inhabited by Galdanes or Houns", and these locations are on their lands
- "to the village below and continues onto the plains." so on plains, but also looks like it lies next to nearby forests. The mountain rock is described as "freestanding", so fits any area, but could also fit an area with nearby hills.
- Close to Sabirians, as they are the first on the scene to raid it.
- Also close to Caberians, as they are second.
- Also close to the Vasnians, as they are third.
- Also probably close to Firestead, as the dwarfs wants to claim it too.

Watch of the Sisters: Village in crimson forest, close to the Cabera volcanic crater and Strilling.
- Fits in crimson forest.
- Should perhaps be not too far away from the Drawn Lands.
- Even though it is a lonely mountain, it fits to have other mountains not too far away.
- But why not the village next to the "d" in Bringwood, Havenmark? Well if the red elves mainly resides here, then Vaerefor van Reiben would have looted it long ago? Especially since he would be interested in the music, super growth of the forest, and in Margarita. So the Strilling/Cabera location makes more sense. It could also explain why Protelas could have some influence, far away from Vaerefor. It would be hard for Kasabatoda to get here though? Perhaps he can dream travel via Oxengelder, but that is probably a bit complicated.. and could be why it could take some time.. because Vaerefor should be really interested in this place. (Also selecting the village in Bringwood would make for far less traveling, shortening the campaign)

Tribolia of the Kogler: Noo! It doesn't really fit any pre-placed location, so I'll go for two spaces west of the "H" in Horn.
- We know it is in Firestead.
- It was invaded by demons, so shouldn't be too far up in Firestead, as the demons were kind of held off at the river Burn.
- It should also not be in Tarkin land (the dwarves that sided with the demons), south of the river Burn , as they would not mark the place "taboo" just because it was invaded by demons, and would likely try to seize it.
- It fits that the Astra were forged in the magma from the volcano Horn.

And a campaign tip from me:
There is a thread leading from Taregyll --> Ashenstead --> Watch of the Sisters --> Tribolia of the Kogler --> End game.
I would change that so that they in Ashenstead will give you the name "Watch of the Sisters", but not its location.
If they ask around at any location outside of Ashenstead (as all in Ashenstead are focused on clan, Horn and Have stuff, and not other "pagan" traditions), they can be told that the Dreamstress should know where the Watch of the Sisters is located.
If they need hints to where to go from Ashenstead, perhaps someone points them to the nearest non-clan village that could know more about these lesser traditions, and that could be Salterstay. From another place they could also get to know about Oxengelder and the Dreamstress, but not the location of them, and would still need to get to a location like Salterstay to find that out.
As a bonus, then the party asks for Watch of the Sisters in Oxengelder, she focuses on that area, and tells her ally Vaerefor more about it, and that could then start his interest in the place.
Bonus: As the location of the Tribolia of the Kogler is probably not immediately known, they could perhaps befriend a dwarf in Bann Guelder, or elsewhere, on there way there.
That would change the trail to:
Taregyll --> Ashenstead --> Salterstay (or any other location where non-clansmen have heard a lot about the Dreamstress) --> Oxengelder --> Watch of the Sisters --> Bann Guelder (or other location with a dwarf that could and would want to give the location of the Tribolia) --> Tribolia of the Kogler --> End game.
Note that the players would not at all have to follow the above, they could just find the places by exploring or roleplaying, but its could be there as a helping thread, binding things together.

I haven't studied the map enough yet to really start placing them yet. Also I am hoping we are missing a couple pages in the Blood March Book with the Kin placements the way we had for Forbidden Lands GMG. That Kin map could change things.

But I will definitely try to set aside time to start coming up with ideas soon.

There are kin placement descriptions the book.
Vasnia: Vasnians, Orcs, Wolfkin
The Black: Aslene (Quards)
Ashenvale: Aslene (Galdanes)
Havenmark: Previously elves and Aslene(Houns), now Blood elves <-- This is actually strange, Havenmark is like all forest, so there are almost no plains to ride on for a clan. But perhaps the forest spread after the Houns went almost extinct?
Firestead: Horned dwarves
Just below Firestead: There could probably be some Tarkins (other dwarf clan) and some demons they sided with?
The Wailing: Aslene (Sabirian)
Strilling: Aslene (Caberian)
Varina: Avoided by clans.
In the areas further towards the Fingers of Gand we can guess that there could be a few Alderlanders? Probably some left over demons? restless dead from all the battles fought here? Some Caberians perhaps although they are probably less interested as no armys can get though.. although both Poansa, Grudenstaal and a lot of other Alderlanders did, so.. perhaps it is just horses that can't make it?
Then there are a lot of areas in between, like Frind, Kodra, The Pitwolds, Clester Hills, etc, and they are, I guess, probably contested, between the groups?

Really good post. Great to have some good suggested locations.
Looking over the map looking for the placements, really highlight why we need coordinates on the map :P
