Re: Tolkien Magic

It’s both less and more than before. I love the Magical Result rules, but I’m a little worried my players will go off spawning too many magical results! Also, I think the loss of the scripted magic abilities isn’t a grave one, as the narrative ones arising during okay both tend to be more interestin...

Re: The Problem With Hope

Yes - the new rule for Magical Successes is actually brilliant. It seems Hope can now let you do a lot of things that were manifested differently before or were unclear in the rules, like helping a companion succeed on a roll or upgrading the success level. But none of it quite has the same impact a...

Re: The Problem With Hope

I find these arguments persuasive. My from experience, players want to only spend finite resources where they know it will achieve the desired outcome, or at a time of absolutely dire need. A ~25% chance of success at best is a far cry from certainty. Even if it is easier to replenish, I find it lik...

Re: Are Cultural Rewards gone?

This is another change that is kind of a shame. I can understand it, but I’m not particularly happy about it. Truth is we rarely used the “standard” Rewards because cultural rewards were so much more interesting, so this is one way to cut down on the confusion between cultural rewards and enchanted ...

Re: Favoured vs Ill-favouored rolls

From a purely narrative standpoint, it should really be one or the other. Either favoured, or ill-favoured. I understand the practicalities of gameplay, but I’m having a hard time imagining Tolkien writing scenes with on-the-one-hand / on-the-other constructions. It’s certainly possible there are so...

Re: Alpha Feedback - Removing Cultural Backgrounds / Trait limitations

Francesco said that life paths would be added back in as something unlocked in the Kickstarter, with some different mechanical impacts. I think that’s fine and of course, those narrative backgrounds weren’t meant to be binding, but they were illustrative of the lifestyles of the different cultures a...

Re: General Alpha Feedback

I would like to see some analysis about the new role of Hope and of how adjusted Target Numbers alter the game. I’m not against either of these changes as written in principle, but they are major changes, or at least it seems that way. If someone more skilled at probability analysis than I am could ...

Re: Skill Rename - Enhearten???

I completely agree that both of these changes, while minor, are for the worse. Inspire no doubt was changed because it might lead people to believe that the skill could impart Inspiration as now implemented, a familiar mechanic from D&D and a good one. Unfortunately, this was a skill that alread...

Alpha Feedback - Patrons, Weapons changes

My favorite thing so far is that Patrons have mechanical effects, and that the impact of choosing say Bilbo and Gandalf are materially different and feel good. It is probably just a result of my skimming quickly, but do players individual select their Patron and Safe Haven, or is it only as a group?...

Alpha Feedback - Removing Cultural Backgrounds / Trait limitations

Some elements of the streamlined character creation actually weaken the flavor of the One Ring’s unique setting and create probably unforeseen constraints on character creation. The removal of Backgrounds is a shame. Without them I think it can be difficult to differentiate how the different culture...
