Use, yes, but by RAW it won't do anything, as you cannot take checks for Advanced skills without any points in them.

To use an advanced skill, you need at least a skill level of 1.

I am not sure what you mean.
The rules on p. 196 state that each gunner on a ship may fire a weapon.
(and only one weapon may be launched per turn, i.e. torpedoes).

For smaller groups, have them use the rules for assists?

Those are PDFs only and are from the original Coriolis kickstarter iirc.

They were later released as a PDF bundle to non-backers:

They all work, as the PCs are sort of "pulled into" the events, imho.
