Hullo, silverfoxdmt73,
Perhaps a little late to be asking this question, but what are people's opinions on what role would best fit a ship's captain? If we assume a class IV, or similar ship, who would make the 'best' captain in terms of lore and/or character role?
For smaller ships, maybe a pilot would best fit as it has a small crew, but for larger vessels would a diplomat sub-role make for a better captain?
When it comes down to it, since the crew position of Captain has certain functions during ship combat, the main skill the Captain requires is that of Command. Since the higher Command skill the better, the Negotiator/Diplomat and the Soldier/Officer are the best choices for the captain's position, since they both can raise the Command skill to 3 at character generation. That said, any player character can be the Captain of the ship by taking 1 skill level in Command. The key is really what other skills the Captain character has in addition to Command. Some Culture skill is also useful, and Manipulation skill can be a benefit to a person in charge.
Just my 2 birr, of course.
