6th Polish Security Regiment info?

Wed 15 Nov 2023, 01:42

Trying to find some more information on the 6th Polish Security Regiment as listed in the OPORD Handout and im coming up empty.

I'm assuming they're part of the Silesian Corps, since that's attached to 3rd US Corps, and not the Free Polish 6th Brigade listed in UO, but nothing is coming up when I deep dive into Polish Territorial Defense Forces or the Silesian Corps as a whole.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Found this (slightly redacted) CIA document on the 4th KBW Regiment when searching for "Polish Security Regiment" on google.
https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CI ... 0003-2.pdf
Not 6th, but im getting closer

Edit 2: Looks like there were 10 regiments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_Security_Corps and they became Territorial Defense Forces in 1965: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territori ... s_(Poland). They no longer exist in the same form, as the Polish Armed forces restructured in the late 2000s. This is their current website: https://www.wojsko-polskie.pl/wojska-ob ... torialnej/

Still doesn't really tell me much about the 6th specifically

EDIT 3: Found some more CIA Documents, this time, more heavily redacted:
https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CI ... 0003-8.pdf approx. 1200 men, CO named, no further info
https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CI ... 0004-1.pdf Stationed in Poznan, no more info.

The more I read about the KBW, the less and less these seem like good guys lol. Communist Backed Counter-Terrorism unit, but was primarily used to crush rebellions.

Short answer: There seems to never have been a 6th Regiment in the internat forces of communist Poland. The KBW was restructured in 1965 into the Internal Defense Forces (Wojska Obrony Wewnętrznej; WOW) and remained as such until 1989. These forces were paramilitary in theory only, in reality they were the territorial army equivalent of communist Poland. Now for specific units: There was a 5th Brigade in Kraków (Highland Brigade), a 7th Regiment in Dęblinie and 6th Battalion in Lubliniec, which was also home to the Polish army special forces unit during the 1990s. Originally named 26 Batalion Dywersyjno-Rozpoznawczy (26th Sabotage-Reconnaissance Battalion) in communist times, it was renamed 1 Pułk Specjalny (1st Special Regiment, apparently the commandos were enlarged as well from battalion to regiment, but this might have been on paper only) in 1993 and then again renamed in 1995 to 1 Pułk Specjalny Komandosów (1st Special Commando Regiment).

All in all, one could assume that the Polish (pro-NATO) 6th Security Regiment somehow might trace its line back to the 6th Battalion, but that's just a hypothesis. WOW was dissolved in 1989 and its equipment might have become part of the old Territorial Defense Forces (Obrona Terytorium Kraju; OTK), because communist Poland not only had a paramilitary de facto territorial army (WOW), but also a true, yet diffently organzied territorial defense force (OTK). These existed until 2008 and were recreated in 2016 in the light of renewed Russian aggression in Europe.

Short: I would take the 6th Regiment to be a war-time formed security regiment, likely with sub-standard equipment and maybe subordinated to a territorial defense command, whatever that means or looks like in 2000. After all, this is after three years of war and a total conventional and nuclear crush of Poland, its armed forces and its civil society.

Yeah, they seem to be written as more of a local milita type, used as Guides, translators and POW handlers mostly

Yes, that's my take as well. They're a GM tool to take of burdens from the players and share perspectives and information from a Polish point.
