When to put an adventure scenario?

Sat 09 Jul 2022, 18:19

Hi. How are you all? I have a question about map exploration: When should I put an adventure scenario (town/dungeon/castle)? It is a random table result that I missing or its totally to my consideration?

I would like to have an specific random result just for consider the chance of appear for each special location.

Thank you!

I personally create 3 of each kind with the random tables and put them on note cards (3 villages, 3 castles, 3 dungeons) and mark them all 1-2, 3-4, 5-6.The if my players decide to explore a Hex I roll a d8. on a 7-8 they don't find anything. 1-2 they find a village. 3-4 they find a castle. 5-6 they find a dungeon. Roll a d6 to determine which one I pregenerated. Hexes are big and can typically have about 3 of these minor adventure site in them if they are really looking. If I want something to be harder to find I up the exploration die size. (d10, d12).

I view adventure sites as a pacing mechanism as well as story hooks. If characters get XP for discovering a new site or for going to a new hex then a site that can keep them occupied for a session or two also changes the XP rewards. So that plays into my decision to place a site or not because a village with a mystery to investigate will, by RAW, not net as much XP as a dungeon crawl with monsters and treasures nor as much as exploring the wilderness.

I love this approach. Thank you for the tip.
