Blight Born Template/Corrupton Damage

Hello All...

I've noticed in the beastiary, that page 120 has a "blight born template" and that all of the monsters listed in the blight born section have ways of inflicting corruption damage (beyond the monster features listed starting on page 215).

Examples - the blight born aboar does + 1d4 temp corruption with their tusks while the blight born human does +1d4 with their claws and the blight burn fairy does 1 point of temporary corruption.

My question is... Where is this corruption damage coming from? I don't see it listed in the blight born template and I dont see something like "Corrupting Attackā€ from the native rules listed anywhere. Is it outlined somewhere to add "X" amount of temporary corruption damage to a blight born creature based upon its CR (or something).

I like the damage being there... I just want to know where it came from so I can take that into account when creating my own monsters or altering existing monsters (especially from 5e). I figured it would be on the template or listed among the monster features, but im not seeing it. As near as i can tell, DMs will just need to eyeball the existing monsters that do temporary corruption damage and model what we may do off of them.

Did i miss this somewhere? Anyone have any insight on this? Jacob maybe?

It's a tricky thing to answer. The Corruption damage is hinted at in the suggested features but how much Corruption damage to add to regular attacks is really a function of how deadly you want the adomination to be. Corruption damage will rarely kill you, of course, but some monsters do damage based on how much Corruption you've acquired and some areas can pump a lot of Corruption into you at a fairly fast rate, causing you to have to make multiple checks, which will give you Marks of Corruption and/or become blight-born yourself. If you're familiar with the challenge rating rules for the core, you'll know that pushing up the challenge rating pushes up the average damage, adding Corruption damage in that range is a good average, but be mindful of whatever features you add on as well.

Thanks Jacob. I wish I had caught this earlier as I would have brought it up, but I feel like this should be mentioned in the blight born template (or just as maybe a sidebar in general) regarding corrupton damage. Obviously there's a precedent, since it's the in all the blight born monsters, as well as some other monsters without the blight born template, like the death knight.

It seems like it's not difficult to "eyeball" as it were. Especially if, like you pointed out, increasing the CR (which the template does) can accommodate that extra damage. And we're not taking a "lot" of damage here... even the CR 12 or 13 death knight only does +1d4.

Btw, I love the bestiary. Work of beauty!
