BMD-1

Fri 29 Oct 2021, 07:17

The Referees Manual shows elements of the Soviet 35th Guard Air Assault Brigade at Kalisz after Operation Reset with 550 personnel and 26 combat vehicles. The Poland Player Handout shows one element of the 35th Air Assault Brigade being the 352nd VDV Battalion (BMD-1). The Players Manual only lists stats for the BMD-2. Both are airdroppable amphibious IFVs. Would anyone like to give some stats for the BMD-1?

Wikipedia entries for both...

[EDIT]

I guess you would get pretty close by just changing the 30mm cannon to 73mm and Crew to 2+6?

[EDIT 2]

And having read those Wikipedia articles I now discover that there is a BMD-3 that came into service in 1990.

I just thought it would be nice to have full write-ups of these vehicles as at the start of the default campaign Kalisz and presumably the surrounding area is swarming with Soviet Air Assault Brigade troops. These would be the most likely first contact of the players' group as they flee Kalisz.

I'd expect almost none of these vehicles to remain intact. Airborne troops are not known for suffering small numbers of casualties. First in, last out.

But essentially they are much smaller BMPs, with the same armament.

And even less armor. It's not meant to take a punch and much rather hold off personal firearms and some artillery splinters.

We already have stats for the BMD-2, just not the BMD-1, despite it being mentioned in the Poland player handout...

35th Guards Air Assault Brigade
- 351st VDV Battalion (BMD-2)
- 352nd VDV Battalion (BMD-1)
...

I think it's probably safe to treat it like the BMD-2 listed on p122 of the Players Manual but with a 73mm cannon instead of the 30mm autocannon, Crew of 2+6 instead of 4+4, and slightly lower cost.

Correct. BMD-1s also had Malyutka or Fagot ATGM launchers (probably long gone) and BMD-2s had Konkurs. All of these were detachable IIRC to be used by the infantry.
