I just picked up this game and am very excited to try it...but I'm wondering if the card deck is necessary?

No. The cards that have various Vaesen on them are there as a form of achievement for the players. They are beautiful but not necessary. The initiative cards are nice to have but you can use any set of ten cards (numbered 1-10) instead.

They provide a way to show the Vaesen to the players without showing the book page with stats, too. That's the biggest benefit for me.

I ended up buying a deck, and I'm glad I did!
