Backpack (and sack) and encumbrance

Mon 10 Aug 2020, 18:29

Hi,
what's the use of a backpack?
In the equipments table it says: "Does not encumber the wearer"
So, essentially, it does not take up a line in the inventory, which would be very valuable indeed if it allowed you to stow x number of items in it for free. But it doesn't. So what's the use? Same goes for sack. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!
L

What else are you going to carry all your stuff in? Are you gonna lugg it around in your hands?

It's mechanical impact is that your hands are free while carrying all your crap.

A sack is for carrying your food rations. As in..

Sack... food.
Waterskin.... water
Quiver.... arrows

Yeah, say you find a bunch of small valuable things, where are you going to carry them without a container?

EDIT: Forbidden Lands (as do many YZE games) have a principle that if it's not on your sheet, you don't have it and that includes means of conveying items.

It's mechanical impact is that your hands are free while carrying all your crap.

A sack is for carrying your food rations. As in..

Sack... food.
Waterskin.... water
Quiver.... arrows
It says that your starting gear includes a knapsack,
Page 36: "STARTING GEAR: Your profession determines what gear you can choose from at the start of the game. As a rule, you get one or more items from the list of trade goods on page 182 (no
RARE items however). If it says, “a weapon of your choice,” pick one from the weapon tables in Chapter 5. You cannot choose a magical artifact. In addition to these items, you are assumed to have a knapsack and a waterskin. Gear used to carry other gear does not count toward your encumbrance and does not need to be noted down."

So we houserule that the Backpack gives you a couple of extra inventory rows, as a good backpack allows you to carry more then a just a sack over your shoulder.

Rows of inventory does not really matter. Only weight does. Not really sure where it says that you can only carry up to the rows on the player sheet to be honest. I cannot recall that rule existing.

The backpack and knapsack are identical for use. But if you lose your sack, you need to find a backpack.

Page 37 (English version, 2nd print, but there are almost identical Encumberance rules in several Zero Engine rules) ENCUMBRANCE:
"An item designated as HEAVY counts as two regular items, and will take up two rows on your character sheet instead of one. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are items that are designated as LIGHT – they count as half of a regular item, and so you can list two LIGHT items on one row on your sheet."

Sure. But that is irrelevant as long as you have the items listed and their weights.
You can carry strength x2 before becoming encumbered. Which means you COULD carry 16. The basic sheet doesn't have 16 lines. But it isn't against the rules to do it. So it's not the lines that really matter it's the recording of weights.
