Balrog wings

Sun 09 Aug 2020, 20:11

Or another topic.

We need a good, rollicking debate.

Sure, why not. Wings of shadow and smoke and fire sounds cool to me.

If a Balrog had wings, would it choose to live underground where he can't fly?
He either doesn't have, or they are just hysterical and useless (Radiohead dixit).

Perhaps they are used to fan it's internal flame while simultaneously dispersing excess smoke for ventilation, like how an elephant uses its ears to cool itself off? :geek:

Or, perhaps they are used to help a balrog glide across giant chasms underground and along cliff tops above ground. Perhaps that could be a way to interpret the balrogs "flying" to Morgoth's aid against Ungoliant.

Or Balrogs, even more than orcs, hate sunlight.

I'm of the "WIngs of Smoke and Shadow" camp, at least in regards to the Balrog of Moria.

Weren't Balrogs canaries once? Taken from the dwarves by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. I think I read that somewhere...

Maybe Balrogs have wings for the same reason many of us wear capes. For instance: style, badassery, vampirism, affectation.
