I understand that the group is all around him. If he stands in the crowd can choose part of this crowd or works on everyone?
How far and how many is affected?

I don't think you choose, it affects everybody in the group you stand in. I think it affects everybody in the location/scene where you are at.

The Swedish version uses a better word than 'group', namely 'crowd'.
