I don’t see how to make this talent work, does it mean that you can’t ever be injured as long as you’re not alone ?

No, it means that you can try to manipulate the circumstances in a way (move out of the harms way, putting your buddy between you and the source, etc.) that gives you a chance to live another day. If you don't have someone near you, you can't use the talent. If you have someone - you can try, but there is no guarantee that you will succeed as there is roll involved. Interesting talent that can generate a lot of tension between you and the other characters

I have another question about this talent. In the description, it says to "make a MANIPULATE roll (straight roll, not opposed, and does not count as an action)". What does straight roll mean here? A normal roll (number of dice = EMPATHY + MANIPULATION values) or that you only roll with 3 dice (for Wilson's MANIPULATION skill)?

Straight means not opposed and not more than one success needed. Just a simple skill check.
