Peddler - Merchant - Trader

I'm delighted to see a mercantile class, which is often neglected in fantasy RPG's.  The name bothers me, though.  It is certainly an accurate translation, but I wonder if "peddler" is the best name to use.  "Merchant" or "Trader" are the names used in most sci-fi RPG's.  They sound more heroic.  I understand that that merchants and traders don't necessarily travel with their goods, and peddlers do.  This is purely a matter of emotional connotation.  Am I the only one who associates the word "peddler" with "small" or "petty"?  Would players shy away from this interesting class, based on the name?

The players are not necessary heroes. He can be a hero of course if he survives or he can become a villain or he can be someone that is buried in an unmarked grave.

Also, you might start the game as a simple peddler. If you want to become a rich merchant and be powerful and all that, you have to go out and do something about it.

Peddler is okay for me as the character will not start as the head of a merchant house but as a lonely trader with all his trade good in his giant backpack or on a cart drawn by himself - better than a bone picker ;)
