What does the computer gear get used for - can't find anything explaining their use

Guess you could do some data jinn stuff with them hack databases that you cant attach your ships computer (not that it is said anywhere that ship has a computer) maybe run some math analysis on the ground if doing some planet based adventure? Use them as ballast in your water jet? 

There is a hint that they COULD be used to aid in anything, but under stress thats different. Maybe you could think it gives +1 roll to what ever character is doing when not in stress and according to tech level in stress soo advanced computer would help you hold your breath and lift heavy things be better at fist fight and dodge better... Guess it could give you some really detailed real time situational awareness ("most efficient way to lift is using your leg muscles, best way to stylistically is that direction and here is some calming music for you to hold your breath") 

So not much use then overall - when do the panalties and bonuses it gives you get applied, etc

In a previous rpg my group played, personal computers were able to run a variety of programs that, when used as action before attempting a difficult task, would apply a bonus to the skill roll based on either the level of the program being used and/or by the amount of time spent "studying" or "preparing" for the task ahead. This wouldn't be much different from reading "How To" or "For Dummies" or watching a bunch of different You Tube videos before trying something. It could apply to most non-combat skills provided you aren't rushed. Picking a difficult or new style of lock, repairs on a vehicle or modifying a weapon. Even brushing up on climbing, or a particular language before you meet that ambassador. The bonus applied could be anywhere from +1 to +3, and if reasonable could last as long as an entire encounter.

You can use computers to get in to the main frames of ships, access surveillance systems in palaces or hidden bases and re-program these systems. So if you hook up your computer you get the bonus. For example - ship mainframes might be accessible thru the bridge interface but without bonus to DATA DJINN unless you use your computer.
Hope that answers your question. In out planned scenarios there will be examples how to use both the skill and gear in those situations.
