Advices to GM for Summer Break And Killer Birds

Mon 09 Jan 2017, 19:48

Hello !

I planned to GM this story and I would like to get some advices.

First : do you plan to add the map of the main village/town or, by default, a "typical" map of a sweden village/town that could help the beginner GM ? ;) Knowing weather conditions in winter in Sweden, I guess that there is some specificities that won't work for other villages/towns. I was thinking of Twin Peak town (http://welcometotwinpeaks.com/) or Ichor Falls town (http://broodhollow.wikia.com/wiki/Ichor ... or's_Guide).

Second : Is the town big enough to get its temporary fairgrounds (for example : http://www.washcofair.com/images/midway2.jpg ) ? I could use this kind of artefact to amuse children with something that could become a normal event and make them believe that the mystery will be there this time... ;) And it could become a hook for other times ! ;)

As a french GM, I hope everything is clear. I will update this post later, after some research for the right words.

I agree with Ysarius that some sort of map would be very useful. It is rather easy to find public maps on the web for 2017 Stenhamra in our "alternate" reality, but how would the town look in the 1980's of the Loop? There are some distinct features that would probably still be there in the same place, like the main roads, the schools, the old quarry, the water tower and major shops of the 80's. Other things might be new, connected to the Loop and Riksenergi. Players from our group are already checking out "Ekonomisk karta över Sverige", 1981 edition, but an "official" town map would indeed be most helpful.

I had the exact same thought today! I would like a map showing where there are stores, schools, and other important places. Given that the Loop and other facilities have increased the number of people living in the area, it's possible to add stuff that wasn't there in "the real" 1980's.

Also, places mentioned in "Things From the Flood" should be referenced in a more detailed map. "Berggården" is apparently a place that's off the "official" map, and is on the mainland. "Hägerstalund Tower" is one of the twelve "vertical cities" in the Mälar valley, and could be situated in or around Akalla - the locations and names of those quite distinct complexes are of interest.

I was reading the story again to place known informations from chap 7, 8 and 9.

I will do the same with the art book to be sure not to forget anything and for visual inspirations.

First of all, for the 4 stories, the kids seem to be living somewhere near Kungsberga (see P98). I will have to find some map for this village/town ! ;)

Stenhamra seems to be one of the place for mystery landscape, where they are supposed to find the school and the library. Does it means that this is the town for their school ? [Link to]

@Björn Hellqvist : does temporary fairground come in sweden villages or town in the 80' ? Will Kungsberga be big enough or can we locate the fairground in Stenhamra (if we need one) ? [Link to]

Maybe, here are Flygfoto över Kungsberga

There were (and are) temporary fairgrounds traveling Sweden, so feel free to use one for your story.

Great !

The last point (for now ;) ) is size of "towns" compared to each other.

The fairground should be in the bigger one so, if the school of our kids is in Stenhamra, it should be located there for summer ;)

For "places mentioned in "Things From the Flood"" (I don't have the book yet), I guess that they are hard structures that need to be all ready created in the 80' ?

Or maybe they could be under construction in the 80' and become places for kids curiosity ;)

Some buildings, facilities, and suburbs mentioned in "Flood" were built in the 60's. Most appear to have been built by the mid-80's.

By the way, when I went to Sweden in the 90', I got a tourist map of Uppsala and places around it like Bjorklinge (too big for KUNGSBERGA). Maybe one of those map could be used as an approximation of our heroe's towns !

But I have to look for more information concerning citizen number, geographical stuff and so on.

This investigation is quite funny ! ;)

Well, to find a suitable village/town, I used local population for :

KUNGSBERGA : Few hundred people live (P22), say around 300 people.
STENHAMRA : Few thousand people (P22)

I will use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_u ... _in_Sweden ordered by population.

Then, I will test place's map with google map to find the right places taking informations from :

http://frialigan.se/forum/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=2661

How many citizen do we need to get a Primary school (grades 1-6 (7-13 years)) ?
