Experience Points Costs during Fellowship Phase

Hi fellow Loremasters,
I am about to run my First campaign after running the Starter Set, all in 2e.

But i can't wrap my head arround the costs for improving a skill or Valour/Wisdom Scores.

The table in the book says, that the cost for a New skill Level for a Level 1 Skill is 4 Skill-Points, for skill Level 2 it is 8 Points and for Level 6 it is 30 Points.

My confusion is: are the costs adding up, so that if you want to go from Level 1 to 2 they would have to spend 4 Points? Then the costs feel a bit random.

Or do the players have to spend the written Points, so that if you want to go from skill Level 1 to 2 they'd have to spend 8 points? Then it seems you need to play very much to reach a Level 4 or even a Level 6 skill.

Thanks in advance for your answers! :)

The table you use during play is on p119. You pay the cost shown to go up one rank to that rank.

So for example, if you're Skill rank 2 and want to go to rank 3, you would pay 12 Skill Points.

You cannot buy multiple ranks in one go, so no need to worry about stacking costs. However, if you start at zero, to get up to maximum, you'd have to spend 100 Skill Points.

The different amounts of SP required aren't due to a formula, but because some ranks are more valuable than others. Getting your 4th rank adds meaningfully to your ability to pass your TN while also being likely to add an extra success. Your sixth rank is unlikely to help you much to pass the TN (because a feat +5d6 is very likely to pass anyway), and just adds the 1/6 chance to get an extra Success - as such, it's less valuable/desirable, and so the cost increase is smaller.
